After the 2007/2008 reserves season:
The star of the reserves team this season has been young Argentine Emiliano Insua. Remember the 0-0 draw with Newcastle reserves back in February, Emiliano had a fantastic game with his surging runs down the left and was unlucky not to cap it with the winning goal...
He’s played in all of the Reserves league games this season and how he hasn’t scored a goal this season is unbelievable!! All season he’s been wonderfful getting forward and has the ability to beat a couple of defenders before getting a cross in and has looked very steady at the back. He has been superb for most of the season where he has excelled at overlapping Putterill or Leto on the left.
DanDagger summed Insua up perfectly
DanDagger wrote:
He is by far one of the best reserve players for quite a long time now. He is head and shoulders above the rest and is always consistant. He is 19 I think and I belive he has earnt a place on the bench at least. Looking at the reserve game, he is strong, has good pace, his defensive attributes are ok, he has a good cross on him and has good stamina. I am amazed that he is still playing for the reserves when he could easily be showing Mr Riise and Aureio up in that position.
Gary Ablett also commented on Insua “He's been very consistent for us. I think we forget that he's still only about 18 because it feels like he's been here a while and he played a couple of games last season in the first-team too. He won't let anyone down if he's called upon, just like he didn't at Portsmouth and Fulham last year. He loves to get forward and join in and we've asked him to concentrate on his defending a lot more now. That's his bread and butter and will be the key to him developing here. We think he can and has the ability and the understanding the defensive side of his game. Once he does that we will have a very good full-back on our hands.” His success for the reserves paid off at the end of april when made his first league appearance of the season, coming on as a second-half substitute for John Arne Riise at Birmingham, and the 19-year-old left-back performed well in both defence and attack. He then followed this up with an Anfield debut v Mancheter City a week later.
Forwards.......

I prefer Insua to Aurelio, period. He assisted Torres goal against Villa to make a game of it and has been positionally superior to Aurelio on the defensive side of the ball. He could not stop Elmander's headed assist against Bolton, yes, but Elmander is a good foot taller than he is and Insua shouldn't have been marking him anyway; one of the CB has to carry him to the near post. Obviously, Aurelio is superior in the attacking third, especially on dead ball situations, but Insua has been excellent despite the fact he has been asked to start with Babel, Benayoun and Riera on his side of the pitch; surely impedes the development of a Johnson/Kuyt like chemistry, no?
The problem in defense is the way our 2 CB's have failed to properly attack dead balls into the box. We've conceded nothing else aside from Gerrard's penalty. I think Insua has been excellent."Our legacy begets an excellence that surpasses the particulars of who produces it." -- David Carr

I still prefer Aurelio to Insua - I think his passing is far better as is his composure. The fact that Agger can offer us similar from centre back is a big plus also. The sooner both are back the better, though I think it's midfield that we really need to concentrate on getting right at the moment.Like blood on iron

RAFAEL BENITEZ is relishing the prospet of having Fabio Aurelio fit again after the international break.
Liverpool are next in action when Burnley go to Anfield on September 12 and the manager expects to have the Brazilian left-back back in his squad following the knee problem which has forced him to miss the start of the campaign.
“Fabio is back training and playing football,” Benitez said.
“After the end of the international break I don’t think he will have any problems and he will be able to be involved in normal training sessions and be in the squad.
“Daniel Agger is walking again after his back operation and Nabil El Zhar’s knee injury is also improving so that is very positive.”
Benitez is also happy with the progress Alberto Aquilani is making in his recovery from injury.
The Italian midfielder made the switch to Anfield in a £20million deal from Roma last month but has spent the past three weeks continuing his rehabilitation at Melwood following the ankle surgery he underwent in May.
The 25-year-old is unlikely to make his debut before the start of October but Benitez said: “Alberto is improving.
“We were talking before about six to eight weeks and after a few weeks his ankle is much better but he will need time.
“He’s in the swimming pool and in the gym and working with the physios but he’s not jogging yet.
“We cannot put a date on things and it’s important to just see how he progresses.
“We are checking on him regularly and he had a scan in the past week which showed he is much better.
“It’s just a case of keeping an eye on him every day. When he does start to play everyone will see what a clever player he is.”

He is also better in the air and frankly at the minute we need all the help we can get in that department.Originally posted by Red_Polo View PostI still prefer Aurelio to Insua - I think his passing is far better as is his composure. Aurelio also had his absences last year. I remember a couple of games when he was torn a new arsehole by opposing wingers. Remember against Arsenal, where he had a nightmare defensively. Quality player though, but at this point in time, he has to be understudy to Insua, who has been nothing short of excellent for us, be it as an attacking outlet or from a defensive viewpoint.Last edited by Guest; 01-09-09, 01:04 PM. Reason: Corrected 'tore' for 'torn'. Uncharacteristic error. :D

Insua has been very good but I have to say I prefer Aurelio as I think in most regards he is equally good and he brings a left footed freekick option and a decent height to the party. Obviously Insua as the man in possession of the shirt deserves to be given a chance but I will be very happy when we have an option in that position. A lot of people seem to be going over board in their praise of Insua.Originally posted by fredo View PostAurelio also had his absences last year. Reece, could you change the title of this thread (after merging the thread about Aquilani back in training with this one) to-> Agger, Aurelio and Aquilani back in training?
