I didn't think Spearing did anything of real note, i.e. enough to be looked upon as a successful audition for the first team. Ran around a lot and tried to slide the ball in to the forward a couple of times but didn't seem to have a lot of tactical or positional sense.
I think the comparison with Lucas in terms of progressive passing is a bit unhelpful as he was playing off the front man. He gave the ball away more but was higher up the pitch, he was more progressive but he was playing as an attacking player. He very obviously wasn't up to the role off the forward at senior level but I'm not sure it says a lot about his long term prospects."The man who never alters his opinion is like standing water, and breeds reptiles of the mind."

agree with you Reece, he is ok - and that's about it really.Originally posted by Reece View PostSpearing was okay, but I wouldn't put him in my top three last night.
I bet he gave the ball away more times than say Lucas did against West Ham, and this was against League 1 opposition. And as he was playing the "Gerrard" role behind the striker I would expect him to be playing mostly forward passes.
As I've said in another thread, I like the lad, and I watch a lot of reserve games so I'm not basing my opinion on this one game, but I don't think he'll make it at the top level. I'd have Lucas ahead of him without question right now.
Are we just talking about him because he is a scouser and came through the academy?
for me, Lucas is a far better player and has a lot more to contribute than Spearing

i'd say for me regardless of where he is from - for a youngster come up through the ressies, he played well last nightOriginally posted by Molby View Postagree with you Reece, he is ok - and that's about it really.

I think it's a bit unfair of us to be comparing Jay to Lucas. Obviously Lucas is better than Spearing at the moment, but in my opinion it is only due to the fact that the latter has only played his third game (and first full start) for us, while Lucas is already approaching the 100 mark. Remember what a pile of **** Lucas' performances were when he joined the club? He was a horror to watch at times and his performances were certainly nowhere near the level of performance that Spearing put in yesterday and against Real Madrid. And yet he received so much support and praise from Rafa (despite looking completely uncapable of playing at a Championship level), he was included into the squad selection over and over again and that's what has hepled him improve so much. The same must be done with Spearing, otherwise we're wasting a big talent in my opinion.

Thought Spearing was fairly poor personally. That doesn't mean too much as it was only one game but I'd say Lucas has been better in every single game he's played this season than Spearing was last night.Originally posted by the rev leeroy brown View Postyou cant. i told you it was un-arguable. spearing showed talent, commitment, first pass was always to try and go forward, energy. not bashing lucas cause dont want to start another lucas bashing thread, but i'd defo have young jay in ahead of lucas at this moment in time. hopefully rafa will see that too."My commitment to Liverpool is 100 per cent. I would die for that Liverpool shirt. I think the club loves me and I feel the same, no matter what the situation." - Pepe Reina, Nov '09.

It would certainly make a refreshing change from what we usually call you.Originally posted by Craig_H View PostJust call me a visionary.

Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.
May the Lord bless this post.

So would I!Originally posted by Reece View PostI'd absolutely argue both of those points.
I can only think that was agenda driven or Rev has no idea about how football is played.
