No, he's actually been carrying an injury since just after the early games, and it has meant less training and some slight body imbalances, hence further injuries. He needs a break, but......

I think being an average player for us often means a lot more about your quality than being a good player for the likes of Stoke in most positions. There is also the fact that different teams require different types of player. Etherington delivers a good cross the rest of his game is not all that great. He has done well for them but would not in my opinion make the step up or even work as well as he does for them in nearly any other system.

Up and down I would say. And that I think was his reputation before he came to us.

Nope, Spurs and City are though. Should be a good match.

Its easy to say that because a player plays at a small club that he wouldnt be able to make the step up and deliver in a pressure job at Liverpool. I don't think that argument means anything, you could say that about any player at any smaller club. Fact is that the players we have spent many millions on are hardly impressing or standing out

Yes, I agree, but I would still much rather have a fit riera there than etherington.

The thing is that there are obvious reasons for someone like Etherington to over achieve at Stoke. He is a reasonable footballer with a great cross, they are a team of giants so they get the best out of his crossing. He gets more room to cross because they are a team that plays long balls and attack on the break. We playing in different setups in the past he has been less effective.

The argument is generally true - most players wouldn't make it. It is easy because it is the default situation. In order to think a player would make it at a top team you have to make a strong case.

Last season Riera was an integral part of a very good team. I'm not sure that either Babel or Dossena are argued for by many. I think if Babel gets some things right in his game understanding then he could be good but at present I would sell him. He had the attributes to progress to an exceptional player though and the money we spent on him was in my mind a reasonable gamble even though it didn't come off.

In any case, Riera isn't playing.

I'm going to be watching Spurs vs Manchester City. How I wish we had either of those managers.
