    Tommy Smith

Anfield legend Tommy Smith believes that Liverpool should consider looking at targets playing for Championship and League One clubs ahead of the January transfer window.

Following Rafael Benitez's side's 2-0 defeat to Portsmouth, the ex-defender has tipped Leeds United hitman Jermaine Beckford as the perfect foil for striker Fernando Torres with the Yorkshire club's financial position seen as a key factor in snapping up the 26-year-old.

He said: "You've got Torres now arguing away at the referee because he's being kicked to death.

"There's a centre forward at Leeds called Beckford. He's big enough to take a little bit of chopping round and he looks like someone who could play up front with Torres.

"I think he's a half decent player and with Leeds looking for money he'd probably cost a million or two."

Cardiff City's Anthony Gerard, cousin of Reds skipper Steven, has also been suggested as good defensive addition following Sotirios Kyrgiakos' disappointing start to his Anfield career.

Smith said: "The other week I was watching Cardiff play and there's a centre half playing for them called Gerrard.

"He looked like a real decent player; no messing about. He had a little bit of Jamie Carragher in him because he was barking at his team mates.

"If he (Benitez) has got enough money to go out and maybe get someone to look at them and see if they can actually play at Liverpool because there's so many players at Anfield that shouldn't be there."

Smith, dubbed the Iron Man by the Kop during his days as a Liverpool player in the 1960s and 1970s, also questioned the decision by Benitez to spend £20 million on injury-prone Alberto Aquilani as a replacement for Real Madrid-bound Xabi Alonso in the summer.

He added: "He cost £20 million and doesn't play for the first six months. Where did that come from? He might as well have kept Alonso and continued arguing with him!"

The nonsense he's talked over the years is astonishing. Jermaine Beckford would struggle in the championship let alone at our level.

Would he bolloks, he's a lethal finisher that lad and he's only going to get better. He's still young too.

Hahaha oh my word, you are joking right? Leeds supporters absolutely rip him to bits for needing "ten chances to score one".

26 isnt really all that young either. He's crap.

He's so good his own supporters were cheering the decision to take him off earlier.

Theres definitely some truth in what he says, unsure as to the players he names but nowadays its not fashionable to go for lower division players. Unless its foreign lower divisions.

              Now that is just daft.

Crap my arse, he's the top scorer in that league and 26 is still young. Doubt very much they cheered when he came off.

Anyway I'm too depressed to start arguing with you and I don't want to argue with you either.

You think he's crap and I don't so we'll leave it there.

Did Smith not see our game v Leeds? I know you can't judge a player on one game but he wants Beckford to partner Torres? Ngog scored a clinically taken goal that night, yet Smith's not arsed about him?
Thanks very much for being ‘This Mornings’ Farmer’

                  Errr no, he's not.

waccoe.com if you need Leeds supporters confirming what happened. He's a decent league one striker, at our level he'd be crap which is exactly why at 26 years old he's still rotting at that level.

But we haven't spent 20mill on an injured player, we've put a down payment, on a player that is mainly for the long term future, Rafa did not have the 30mill form Xabi to spend, why does this myth continue, so he was never going to replace Xabi like for like quality wise, not straight off, he simply didn't have the cash.

Come on. You know that common sense won't be used by those who want to use hysterical hyperbole to bash our manager.

Tommy Smith looks more like Alex Ferguson in that picture.
