    Top 4 contenders, best 11.

quite a balanced article from a spurs fan.......probably about right, although not sure carragher should be there now.

    Top 4 Contenders Best XI
    by Alan the librarian
The most fascinating battle in the Premier League has to be the race for 4th place. There is now just 4 points separating Tottenham, Man City, Aston Villa and Liverpool who will hoping their team is first across the finish line.

So who has the best players?

Before I start with my suggestions I should mention the methodology. Firstly, this will be based on the rule that form and injuries are temporary, class is permanent. Secondly, it'll be a 4-4-2 system as all but Man City play that way. Finally, this will be based on inidividuals and not necassarily what makes the most compatible team.

    So lets start!

    Goalkeeper - Pepe Reina (Liverpool)

Perhaps the most difficult as all four clubs boast excellent keepers but having won the Euro's with Spain, Pepe just pips it for me.

Left back - Benoit Assou Ekotto (Tottenham)

No outstanding contenders with Insua and Bridge possessing defensive weaknesses and Warnock offering little going forward so Beno is the most balanced of players.

Central Defenders - Carragher ('Pool) and King (Spurs)

Remembering my rule that this based on class then it's an easy choice with Carraghers leaderships skills and medal list and King is just a rolls royce of a defender. City's lot are overrated and Villa's lot are very well marshalled but lack individual talent.

Right Back - Glenn Johnson (Liverpool)

Much like at left back, not many outstanding candidates so the 17m, England International is the obvious choice.

Left Wing - Luka Modric (Tottenham)

The likes of Martin Petrov, Stuart Downing and Yossi Benayounare not fit to clean Modric's boots who if not for injury would be setting the prem alight.

Centre Mids - Mascherano ('Pool) - Barry (City)

All four clubs have got defensive mids but Mascherano for me is World Class and Barry is the best of a weak selection with Hudd and Milner on form but not as talented and the less said about Lucas at Liverpool the better.

Right Wing - Aaron Lennon (Tottenham)

Craig Bellamy is having a good year and Ashley Young is a very good player (I won't mention Kyut) but Lennon has everything. First touch, close control and assists at the plenty. He has made many a left back look very embarrassed this season.

Strikers - Gerrard and Torres (both Liverpool)

As much as it pains me to leave Defoe out, as soon as I put down my rose tinted glasses this was an easy choice. Two World Class proven players.

    Manager - Rafa Benitez (Liverpool)

Using my rule that form is temporary then Benitez honours in the game have to be respected even though he looks a bit of an idiot at the moment.

    Summary

Liverpool have the strongest first XI on paper, especially in the spine of the team, and Villa have no entrants but for me they are a solid team without boasting any outstanding inidividuals. City's 1 entrant may all change come Jan when they'll sign a new team!

He obviously hasn't seen much of Lucas, the fact that that he mentions him makes me raise an eyebrow.

I think this guy is a Liverpool fan at heart : )

i wouldn't mind having modrić or lennon at liverpool, and a fair shout about ekotto aswell, he's been pretty decent in recent times, although i think insua will develop into a better player.

Slightly unfair to label Warnock as offering nothing in attack too.

I think while you could make an argument for any of them I certainly wouldn't want anyone elses players to replace Aurelio or Insua in our squad as left backs.

disagree with many things on this article.

for a start, king at spurs in easily the most overrated pile of ****e i have ever seen. he is a clumsy big oaf who bashes into players and hoofs the ball more often than carra. his form is a joke as he can only play every 2 games at best and more often than not plays only 1 in 3 games. for form over the past couple of years then absoloutely richard dunne gets in there ahead of him.

if class is the basis for this then the only two left backs worthy to me are wayne bridge who was unlucky to be behind one of the best left backs in world football in ashley cole at chelsea otherwise he would ahve become an even better player. also, warnock deserves a place ahead of assou ekotto too.

for centre mid, over the past season stephen ireland was immense. his attacking runs and vision for a quick pass were essential for city last year. he's only young and so will get better. barry is overrated and will soon be found out.

yes it's a 4-4-2 fprmation he has picked to fit his players into but as city don't play a 4-4-2 robinho normally plays out wide on the left vying with bellamy. as form is only temp and class is permanent then robby defo gets the nod for me.

          reina - reina
          assou-ekotto - bridge
          carra - carra
          king - dunne
          johnson - johnson

          barry - ireland
          mash - mash
          lennon - lennon
          modric - robinho

          gerard - gerard
          torres - torres
People who think there's no good way to die have obviously never heard the phrase 'Drug-fuelled-sex-heart-attack'.

We are a top three team, so I'll dismiss this article until proven otherwise.

I agree with Reina but he adds him because of Spain winning the Euro's where Pepe was on the bench wasn't he? Right choice mind, I wouldn't swap him for any keeper on the planet.

i think king is in that list because of his leadership, and organising skills, rather than him being a superb footballer. the same as carra imo. yes his knee is an issue but on form and 100% fitness, i think carra and king are better than any other combination out of that "list". maybe agger would come into contention, but he's gotta pick some spurs players doesn't he

imo pepe is the best goalkeeper in the world right now. iker, buffon, and cech have all been in miserable form lately and have all made plenty costly mistakes, as pepe has made brilliant saves all season. and he's had zero help from his defenders.

pepe's another legend in the making
