Solid performance tonight, didn't see much of him in the second half and i reckon thats a good thing! Couple of wayward passes but he's improving which is alll good!

Not a fan of Lucas but we have to play him at the moment.

He has done very well given the amount of grief he has had to endure. And 23? I'm 33 and not half the player he is. He's only going to get better but fair play to him, he's a battler.

I also think he gets overpraised. We paid 8 million for him, he's had plenty of experience in the Premiership but yet he's still churning out average performances.

I thought it was £6m and wiki agrees with me so I must be right

I'd say he has consistently been the best player on the park for us this season or at least one of our better performers nearly every game. We have been poor but he deserves praise for being the one to step up even when others wilt.

Maybe he does get over praised but he has been twice the player Mascherano has this season. And one of those two is generally regarded as a world class player.

I know it's Nic and he's being unreasonable but could you please cut the abuse. Cheers.

You make completely valid points but I still think Lucas is a weak link while Mascherano can be part of a title winning side.

game seemed to pass lucas by last night but it might also be to do with the fact that we kept spurs out so well so a lot of his job last night was to close down space. he seemed totally knackered towards the end.

I'm not sure if you mean to imply this or not but to me that suggests that you don't think we can win the title with Lucas. Alot of people keep making these general statements about players not being good enough to win the league. The scum have won the league with alot of average players playing regularly: Nicky Butt, Phil Neville, Wes Brown, John O'Shea the list goes on...
I think it's a myth that you need a perfect team to win the league. It's about having the team working well together, look at the Greece side that won the European Championships. Lucas is a good player, not world class but he can be effective for us.

I take your point that in the past other teams have done well and been able to carry average players but in all seriousness the way I see it right now we won't be getting back to our best until we sort out that second midfielder role. It's a pivotal position in the team and it's been lacking quality this season.

I don't think it's a case of carrying players, it's about building a team that is a unit and works well together, players knowing each others game, abilities, strengths and weaknesses and helping one another out. If you bare in mind the performances of the likes of Nicky Butt, he appeared a much better player for Man Utd than he did for Newcastle. If you take him in isolation he's an average player, if you take him in a Newcastle team he's an average player but when he played for Man Utd he was better than average. He had a role, a function in the team and he carried it out and didn't try to do the things he wasn't so good at.

I think that in terms of quality our team is as capable as any of the current top 3 where they have the edge IMO is that they work better together as a team, they understand one anothers games inside out. Our team are still struggling to find that togetherness. I think that is one of the reasons people are picking out weak links or 'poor players' because at present they are still trying to find their role in the team.
