Liverpool fans 'arrested for shouting Yanks Out'

A pair of Liverpool FC fans who claimed they were arrested for making racist remarks after shouting "Yanks Out" in protest at the club's owners have had their case thrown out of court.

James McKenna, 22, said he and a friend were singled out during a peaceful protest at Anfield against American owners George Gillett and Tom Hicks on December 13 last year, purely for making the comments.

They were held for six hours at a police station before being charged with public order offences.

However the case was thrown out by the Crown Prosecution Service at a short Community Justice Court hearing in Liverpool.

Mr McKenna, a member of the Spirit of Shankly supporters' club, which campaigns against the two Americans' ownership, said after the hearing: "I just shouted 'Yanks Out!'

"The police were out on their horses and they grabbed me. When I asked what for they said: 'For racism.'

"We were just there to make our point to the owners as we heard they were attending."

Malcolm Clarke, from the Football Supporters' Federation, said if true it would be of "grave concern".

He said: "This was clearly a protest against two particular people, not a general racist slur against Americans."

A spokesman for Merseyside Police said: "A 22-year-old man from Bootle was arrested for using threatening, abusive or insulting words or disorderly behaviour within the hearing or sight of a person likely to be caused harassment, alarm or distress and was subsequently charged with a public order offence.

"A 30-year-old man from Dingle was also arrested and charged for a section five public order offence.

"Both men were bailed to appear at North Liverpool Community Justice Court where the charges were discontinued."
"The man who never alters his opinion is like standing water, and breeds reptiles of the mind."

It is quite bad that Merseyside Police would arrest them for what they must know is a clear protest against the owners not a racial slur on all Americans.

If they weren't from SOS I'd have sympathy for them.
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

Whilst it is rediculous to be arrested for shouting "yanks out" I do wish the SOS would shut the f*ck Up unless they have a plan for someone else coming in....

It's Hick's and Gilletts club, like it or not...... until THEY decide to sell out (for a profit - or not)

SOS either need to shut up or show their disgust at the "Yanks" by stopping going to games, at least then other fans can take their places and support the team.

LFC is not about the owners but about the 11 men on the pitch....... SOS, Please SHUT UP your embarressing.

I find it very difficult to believe this story. The police officers concerned would have to be stupid or malicious.

              Or both.

              As if.
              .
Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

May the Lord bless this post.

You can be arrested for a racial slur against individuals you know. The only report of what was said is from the accused, so I won't draw any conclusions about the story.

I'm not suggesting for one minute that these people are already known to the police but if they were / are, then the police will always try and find an excuse to "get them out of the limelight".

The scandalous thing is that it went to court, wasting our taxpayers time and money.
