The only way you're going to get Gerrard leaving the captaincy is if he leaves the club.
really? to me that says he thinks he's bigger than the team. a lot of what he does say in the press is very sensible and always about the team coming first.
IF hes to be believed, it wouldnt be much of an issue to move it to carra imho.
My opinion for what it's worth is this -
For me Gerrard is possibly the greatest player in the clubs history because he has been surrounded by more average players and played in more poor teams than the other greats however......
My only problem with him and is that even now in the supposed prime of his career he hasn't learnt or doesn't want to show that he can encourage individuals and the team to play above themselves, he only seems able to lead by example which at the moment is possibly the worst season ever by a world class footballer.
My question though is this, is that Gerrard's fault? do we blame him for playing in generally rubbish sides and having to do everything himself or do we blame the other (generally international) players for not being mentally stronger and playing the right pass instead of passing to Gerrard all the time, do we blame the manager for not solving this problem after all it was only a few seasons ago Rafa had the balls to pick him wide right and left midfield because he though it was right for the team.
Now it's pick Stevie at all costs and play him in his favoured position always.
The King was back for a short while. Long live The King.
Steven Gerrard is the best wide midfielder Liverpool have, with Aquilani on the route to regular football and the persistence with Lucas / Mascherano in the middle, the team would benefit from him playing there with Aquilani in the support striker role.
Its never going to happen though, because The Birdman hit the nail on the head. He could well end up as Liverpool's Alan Shearer.
Despite his insistences of doing what's best for the team, I can't help but doubt his word on that. It was a widely known "secret" he didn't like playing wide, he managed to let everyone know about that whilst saying he'd do it "for the benefit of the team".
The team should come first. Look at Carragher taking on RB duties. Well done Jamie. When he says he'll take one for the benefit of the team, you never doubt his sincerity. Therein lies the difference between the players, and for me why Carragher, along with his cajoling and encouragement is Liverpool's true captain.
I suppose my point is, although I may be wrong, that Carra hasn't been negative about doing it when he's had to this season. Gerrard did play there for a season and every post match (it seemed) he was asked about it and was always saying how much he disliked it. Even though it was as good a season as he's had form wise. Its like now Gerrard says where he's playing.
This season though? I haven't heard him say that this season. I know he has in the past, but my perception is that he is more of the team player...all subjective I know.
