For sure Aquilani is a class act. Some of his vision is pretty impressive though and it's shown in how often he tries the spectacular. He sees something early and goes for it, though it might not be up to scratch, it's due to lack of match sharpness and a little bit of confidence. He's got a good engine and his forward movements are better than Alonso.

I think that in time, he may become an even more important player than what Alonso have been. His job is different and it involves his superior ability in getting into the box and getting assist to the forward players.

If he had proper pace and the ability to drive at defenders, he'd be a world class winger.

I think he is a World class winger its just that he plays inside quite a bit which suits our style as Insua gets more space. His heading, physical strength and tracking back are also excellent attributes, top drawer.

Agree with you there Pete, I think hes going to be a more then capable replacement for Alonso in time.

I'd have to humbly disagree about that, i dont consider him a world class winger - Cristiano Ronaldo is a world class winger. Thing is though, there arent many of them about and Riera's very good, which is fine and dandy, given how few truly world class wingers are out there.

Ronaldo is more then a winger although I probably should have said that I would class Reira in the top three in the World out on the left wing rather then call him a true World class player which I agree he is not.

Riera is less incisive than Ronaldo but he does an overall better job in attacking, positioning and defending I'd say. He isn't spectacular and that plays against him. Ronaldo scores a lot of goals and is, IMO, a class of his own, though I regret saying that as I hate the cunt.

It was great to see Mascherano driving forward down the left wing and then put in an inch perfect cross field ball to Gerrard - it showed that he does have more in his locker than just breaking up play. He looked a different player than the one who constantly gave the ball away against wolves last week.

I think in Aquilani's case, a player who's still coming to terms with a new league, after a very long spell out injured, is entitled to a little bit of leeway.

Er... I said as much in my first paragraph. I expect he will improve. My point was not about the relative merit of his performance, but that Lucas would have been absolutely slaughtered if he'd played as badly. And that, as someone once said, is a fact
