Given our current situation I think the problem with McLeish and Hodgson is that they are reknown for their rigid preparation style. I don't think that top players like Gerrard or Torres would necessarily take that well from managers who have no major honours to their name.
I'm not sure that Hodgson even had many big names under him during his stint at Inter (Paul Ince perhaps) so I'm not sure there is any evidence they have the ability to handle big players in a tough situation like we are in. Both do however have experience building teams with limited resources going for them.
