No compensation if Inter sack JM, which isnt impossible to imagine. He's there to win the CL and as it happens, even the Serie A title isnt a certainty, with Inter wobbling and the gap closed to just 4 points, with difficult games at Palermo, Roma and against Juventus to come.

Let's just draw a line under this - you think JM wouldnt take the Liverpool job, i think he would.

I've already stated on NUMEROUS OCCASIONS in this thread that I expected us to finish 4th this season

I never believed we would challenge, I think losing Alonso was massive and Johnson doesnt add enough imo

On that basis we have underachieved and I can assure you I'm not happy with 7th but sadly I think we wont achieve 4th this season and I think the only chance we have of challenging for 4th anytime soon is if or when the owners sell

Oh and for the record IF we had investment Mourinho would be high up on my list of candidates for the job - alongside Hiddink & Magath but unfortunately I think they are all outside of our current financial paramters and I dont see anything barring investment or new owners that would change that

Never said the owners have done what they should, nor that they have equipped rafa adequately to challenge for anything, but he's got easily enough to work with, to do better than we've done - that is his fault.

Inter coach Jose Mourinho is expected to sign a new deal and then make a fresh bid for Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard, according to Il Corriere Dello Sport.

Club president Massimo Moratti is keen on extending the Special One's contract from 2012 to 2013, and his salary will jump from €11 milion to €13m per annum as part of the new terms.

Once Inter are certain of Mourinho's stay, they will provide the funds he needs to strengthen the squad. First on the list will be Gerrard, who was linked with the club last summer.

But the England international has always made it clear he is not interested in leaving his hometown club.

However, failure to qualify for the Champions League could prompt him to reconsider his Anfield future.

I think he should have done better but again hes also had some bad luck through injuries etc....

But generally he has underachieved this season (as have all our players)

The point is that from here on in only changing ownership is going to drastically affect our league position imo

I'll again point to the emphatic level of admiration and awe with which i think Mourinho sees LFC. As long as he was getting a competitive wage that wasnt derisory, he'd come to us, i think. We may not have city's money but our heritage and prestige counts for a lot.

Regarding the fact that you dont see a positive outcome if rafa goes - why then do you feel that the time has come for a change of manager, as you've said you do, in other threads?

Honestly dude, I'm really depressed about our club and its future right now. I don't think we'll do a Newcastle or a Leeds, but I have very little faith the people in charge to get things right.

I don't truly want Rafa to go, even now I'd still love to see some lunatic rabbit-out-of-hat rescue where suddenly we go 54 games unbeaten and win the league next year on 108 points. But I know that's not what's happening. I can see what you can, and a lot of other fans can, its just not there anymore. We're bumbling onwards but there's no belief. Hell, my mates who support other teams have stopped laughing (mostly) and are being sympathetic.

So I think he will go. And perhaps it will be for the best. Perhaps. But that best will probably not be all that much better while the club is a mess, and can't compete financially with improving sides around us.

Nevertheless, back on point, I just don't think Mourinho is at all likely enough replacement for all discussions of possible futures to revolve around him.

Until or unless something fundamental changes in the hierarchy of our club, I really don't have a lot of faith in a particularly positive outcome when Rafa leaves. Assuming he does. We may get someone half decent, who'll get us playing again for a bit, but with what's wrong upstairs I think we're in for a tough time over the next few seasons.

It's weird because I think we'd turned a corner recently, with our defence being sorted (we've got one of the best defensive records in the last 10 matches) but we are paying for really appalling away performances where we can't score, even in a brothel.

When you look back at the game vs Arsenal, we battered them for most of the second half but we couldn't put the ball in the net. I think had we won there (and we could have), that would have cemented our upturn in fortune. We started stagnating again after that game and it seemed the belief had gone a little since then, when we started having that little bit of swagger in our play previously, I don't remember the match but we played home and the football was flowing at times.

Confidence is a big thing in football and we've stepped back so badly in terms of that this season. The players were turning defeats into wins last season and were playing like Champions. That little extra step is always the more difficult, unless you've got loads of money.

Actually there is a clause in his contract that says at the end of this season either Mourinho or Inter can part ways with each other, if either wish to do so. All it would cost us is 5.5m..

You really think we battered Arsenal for most of the 2nd half? Battered is a strong word and i think you'd struggle to find 10 people that would think that. I think it was an even game, which neither side deserved to win or lose.

I know what you mean about that swagger, but crucially, that came in home games, and away from home, we're like a completely different (and useless) bunch of nobodies who couldnt win a raffle, let alone anything else.

The problem with turning all these corners, is that before we're able to turn any corners, Gerrard's usually hit the first man on the near post and it peters out.
