I think there's a decent chance that one of the above, or another realistic candidate, could get more from the squad than Rafa managed last year, or would have this year.
I take your point that different managers might be better in different situations. In general though the reason why managers have a bigger name is a track record of success - which is generally argued is a sign of superior ability.

I'm not sure that Grayson has done anything to indicate he is a particularly good manager. If we were picking a league One promotion winning manager Lambert would look to be the more accomplished going by this season.

Given our current situation I think the problem with McLeish and Hodgson is that they are reknown for their rigid preparation style. I don't think that top players like Gerrard or Torres would necessarily take that well from managers who have no major honours to their name.

I'm not sure that Hodgson even had many big names under him during his stint at Inter (Paul Ince perhaps) so I'm not sure there is any evidence they have the ability to handle big players in a tough situation like we are in. Both do however have experience building teams with limited resources going for them.

Grant has been confirmed as West Ham boss, so it won't be him.

From Sky Sports website story, as well as the usual suspects, Hiddink, MON and Kenny there is this one:

Oswaldo de Oliveira, who has steered J League side Kashima Antlers to three league titles, one Emperor's Cup and one Japanese Super Cup since 2007, is 12/1 to take over. WHO?

Also anyone else expect the two useless fcukers in charge of our club to go for the cheap option of Sammy Lee?

wtf? that must be the one the bookies throw in as bait for the idiots. They normally put in a totally off target name at a semi-low odds just pull out money from the idiots.

                  Oswaldo de Oliveira
                  From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Oswaldo de Oliveira Filho (born, December 5, 1950, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) is a Brazilian football manager.
                  [edit] Manager career

Oswaldo de Oliveira became the first team coach for Corinthians in 1999 when Vanderlei Luxemburgo left the club to take the Brazil National Team manager role. Oliveira led the club to win the São Paulo State Championship and the Brazilian Série A that same year. In 2000, he made history by taking the first FIFA Club World Championship.

After leaving Corinthians, Oliveira would coach Brazilian teams Vasco, Fluminense, São Paulo, Flamengo, Vitória, Santos, Fluminense and Cruzeiro. The only title at this period would come with São Paulo, the 2002 São Paulo State Super Championship. He also had a short spell at Al-Ahli of Qatar.

In 2007 Oliveira started to coach J. League side Kashima Antlers. So far he has had a quite successful managerial career in Japan, winning three J. League Division 1 titles, one Emperor's Cup, one Japanese Super Cup. In 2009 he became the first J. League manager to be named J. League Manager of the Year three times.
