Your right. Kuyt got nothing but ball.

Terrible decision to go with the other terrible decisions that went their way in Portugal. That's what made it all the sweeter for me. I hate the cheating mongrels.

I'm interested to see so many people giving Nando MOTM ( or there abouts ) in the other thread.

Other than the goals I didn't think much of his game at all last night. We were caught off side 7 times and I'm sure most of them were Torres. He did well for his 2nd but Kuyt set up the 1st for him. He did OK for me but no way MOTM.

I rated Lucas, Kuyt, Masher, Agger, The Greek even Yossi for their efforts higher than Nando but when strikers score they seem to score highly.

Anyway, it was a great result.

I voted for him as he managed to stay focused throughout. His goals were later in the game which is showing a return to fitness. 2 goals in a European tie is something that deserves a MoM vote IMO. His timing and position for the first was sublime, the coolness of the finish for the second was excellent.

Re Lucas, I like him and was totally made up with him for the goal but his overall contribution didn't warrant so many votes IMO. He gave the ball away needlessly on half a dozen occasions when the old Lucas would've played it safe. We were fortunate to have Kyrgiakos and Agger on fire to keep whacking the ball out of play so that we could re-group. The result was closer than it looked.

Was precisely cos nando was blatantly struggling to get into the game and seemed to be carrying an injury yet still got 2 goals that I acknowledged him. It's that sort of clinicality we often lack.
              3rd place. Worst champions ever.

Loved the 3rd goal, particually as in the 1st half Graham Taylor was asking why 'we bring back everyone for corners?' and 'surely its better to have players up the pitch'

By bringing everyone back it encourages the opposition to only leave 1 back and allows us to break quickly, as we did for the goal

Have to say I agree with all of that. I was surprised to see Lucas poll so highly and overall Torres didn't have that great a game but he's rightly in the mix because he's just a wonderful striker who makes goalscoring look easy and I hope we don't start taking him for granted.

Very good team performance against a good side. Not much to add really - Kuyt was excellent last night - my MOM.

Great performance - possibly our best this season against a very decent side.

Kyrgiakos, Carragher and Agger were all excellent in defending - would perhaps have liked Agger get forward a bit more than he did but considering how dangerous Benfica were I'm not complaining.

Mascherano made it very difficult for them coming through the middle. Lucas had a quieter game (as he tends to when played alongside Masch) but made 2 very big contributions - showed the composure of a striker when he scored. Yossi struggled to get involved at times but still showed his worth when it counted - I thought he did really well in the build up for the second goal getting through the congested midfield and taking 2 players out - we really lack that kind of craft sometimes.

Goals aside, I thought Torres had a poor all round game, he looked off the pace and certainly wasn't match fit - it just shows how dangerous he is by putting away his chances when they came - he really is a class apart.

                        Note on Agger:

His positioning wasn't the best last night the amount of times he wouldn't go forward to support, or forget that he should be taking the throw-ins was amusing.

Still better than Insua there though.

If he was focused as you say, why was he caught off side so many times?

I agree he took both goals well but I expect a bit more from him personally. He got dispossessed easily at times and looked to be struggling. He is an opportunist and did what he does best but I want more!!!!!!!!!!!

I see what you mean but I rated players for their efforts in the whole match, not just patches.

PS lovely use of the word " CLINICALITY " Not used enough IMO.
