      Controversial indeed.

Souness Liverpool legacy has no doubt been soured by his time as manager.

He was however an outstanding midfielder.

Agree, its difficult to seperate the player from the manager particularly in light of the S*n story selling incident. What a player though.

I remember seeing the interview on TV when he said that but after seeing "the Damned United", I would like to know if he was paraphrasing Brian Clough? In the film Clough says something very similar (although may have been directed at directors rather than fans) and the sentiment is exactly the same and of course he played under Clough at Forest (Scabs)

I used to love Kennys hands-over-the-head-running-and-waving-like-a-maniac goal celebration. He's the reason I became a Liverpool supporter. The King, no doubt

Yip - i know exactly what you mean - the King had a profound influence on my decision to follow the LFC path, and this was the game....

I was 5, i remember distinctly, staring at the tv, and from then i was hooked.

                Long live the King...

The goal at 1:57 is my favorite ever. What a turn and an inch perfect through ball.

Jesus Christ! I can't talk footy and I certainly can't write footy...however... apart from his stupendous ability with his arse, as mentioned above, he read the game, pitch and players like no-one else. He wasn't at all fast, but that didn't matter - he was canny to the 11th degree with sweet feet - natural footballer. Having said that, there were never many slackers in those glory year teams - those were the days when I got to Anfield regularly.

I really don't believe you can compare players from different 'ages.' The team he played with was a machine (I know it's a cliche - but we were just awesome and untouchable for years).

Football was a contact sport in those days and we had more than our share of hardmen - but they could also play brilliantly. It's practically impossible to make comparisons.

Being a scouser, or should I say 'red' has been like walking on cloud 9 for me - apart from recently - and of course Hillsborough & Heysel.

You really do need to do some research - buy some DVDs. Try LFChistory.net for starters then look for memorable moments on youtube. Dive in we've a long and glorious history to explore.

BTW - the first LFC match I saw at Anfield had Lawrence, Lawler, Byrne, Strong, Yeats, Stevenson, Callaghan, Hunt, St.John, Smith, Thompson... Alf Arrowsmith might have been there 'an all.

I've been spoken to by Bill Shankly and shook his hand - and he gave me the LFC badge from his lapel. I haven't lost it yet!

Yep, nearly as old as Neil Young!

I really started to follow Liverpool properly after they signed Kenny - when I was at primary school pretty much everyone followed either Liverpool or Man Utd, and I fortunately chose Liverpool. My abiding memory as a child was that they always beat us in the league, but we always won the title.

Kenny was a brilliant player - rather unathletic by today's standards (Dirk Kuyt would still be running after Kenny had sloped off for a pie and a pint) but that was how football was back then (can you imagine Jan Molby coping with the pace of the game today?). His touch and vision were sublime, and it was only because he played with Rush that his goal record wasn't considered at the time to be that great.

His partnership with Rush was a thing of beauty - those of you who think that Gerrard/Owen or Gerrard/Torres had/have an understanding would have been utterly blown away by the way that Kenny and Rushie linked together. There was that great stat that until the League Cup final of 1987, where we lost 2-1 to Arsenal courtesy of a shinned goal by Charlie Nicholas, we never lost a game where Rush scored. When you think that he scored about 40 a season, that's how good we were, and how good a provider Kenny was.

He's clearly the best player we've ever had, although for me I think that John Barnes was not too far behind - at his peak Barnesy was awesome, but a completely different type of player to Kenny. It would have been something to witness if they'd been at their peak at the same time, and played together for us.

Trouble is - I really can't talk football. The other trouble is that I was usually too bevvied to remember most of the matches - just the insane craic we used to have.

Early memory? The windows at the back of the Kop used to have bars in them - no glass. When I was little we used to get there early with me dad and uncles. They'd shove me up there and tell me to hang on. Must be a 50 foot drop on the other side.

It was great...solid, witty, singing for half an hour before KO, then I'd watch everyone being bounced around in front of me and having a laugh. Then I'd have to shout the score down to passers by.

It does all them players you mentioned and the era they played in and the team all had brilliant wingers. Barnes, Houghton, Callaghan, Ray Kennedy, Peter Thompson, Stevie Highway. LFC right now with a John Barnes in his pomp would be challenging for the title. Brilliant wingers something which we are lacking at the moment.
