HODGSON MUST DELIVER NEW PLAN TO SAVE REDS

    Young tops wanted list

ROY HODGSON will get until the end of the season to prove to the new owners he's the right man to lead a Liverpool revival.

Despite the club's poor start, Hodgson's job is under no immediate threat following the Kop takeover by New England Sports Ventures (NESV).

But Hodgson will be told to deliver a blueprint to his new bosses detailing how he intends to rebuild the ailing squad.

NESV will expect Hodgson to show the vision and inspiration required to prove he has a long-term role at Anfield.

He'll be given a £20m transfer kitty in January - with Aston Villa's Ashley Young top of the club's wanted list.

Despite early concerns, both those who appointed Hodgson and the prospective owners fully appreciate the difficulties he's inherited.

With managing director Christian Purslow and commercial director Ian Ayre retaining roles under the NESV regime, Hodgson will benefit from continuity on the boardroom.

There is some sympathy at Anfield for Hodgson's current predicament.

It is broadly accepted the squad he inherited is flawed and Hodgson hasn't had enough funds to improve it yet.

A Kop source told Sport of the World: "The new owners will be fully supportive of Roy and give him time to succeed.

"It's incredible how quickly people have forgotten Roy inherited a squad in decline which finished seventh last season and lost in the FA Cup at home to Reading. Roy has come in and had no quality left back, no full-back cover for Glen Johnson and only one established striker.

"On top of that he's had to deal with all the problems regarding Javier Mascherano wishing to leave and others being unhappy because of the lack of Champions League football.

"Everyone knows the team has to improve immediately, but there is no way Roy's job is already on the line.

    YOUNG: Will be targeted

"He'll get the same support previous managers received when they took the job. They didn't exactly hit the ground running in the league."

Anfield has a tradition of giving their managers time.

In the season following Gerard Houllier's arrival in 1998, Liverpool lost 18 matches. Even his second campaign, his first in sole control, saw Liverpool lose four of their first eight league games before a massive improvement began and trophies started to arrive.

Rafa Benitez lost 19 games during his debut campaign in English football but salvaged his first season with Champions League victory in Istanbul.

Hodgson will benefit from the same levels of patience - at boardroom level at least.

Inevitably there are significant early worries given the lacklustre displays and struggles of some of Hodgson's own recruits.

Vast improvement will be expected and his position will be under constant review if Liverpool don't start picking up points.

He'll be under no illusion his long-term security will be conditional on proving he can get more out of the squad he's inherited - regardless of how much rebuilding has to be undertaken.

Top of his wanted list in January is Young, with Liverpool monitoring the England winger's contract talks.

Young will have 18 months left on his Villa contract when the transfer window opens and his flair and pace would be a much needed addition to Hodgson's side.

so his job is not under threat, but he'll be constantly questioned and any long term safety is conditional on the team not being as terrible as it is now.

Once again Bascombe is continuing with his sly digs at Rafa. Hodgson has actually made the squad worse with some of his poor signings, you ****. He is also definitely making us play worse. The fans aren't stupid so continue with your spin as it won't work. The bit about Rafa salvaging his first season with the CL is shocking and a cuntish point.

Overall I am not happy with the possibility of Hodgson being given a full season. Giving the man £20m will make no difference if (like many people have said) he doesn't change his outdated tactics. I feel dirty saying this but I hope we don't pcik up much points in our next few games if it means throwing this guy out the door. If he stays the full season I wouldn't rule out a relegation scrap especially if we get deducted 9 points.

Rafa had to change from Houllier hoofball to pass and move football so it was only expected to take time. The whole squad was built around the hoofball tactic. A change that was a must because you simply can't win the big titles or challenge for a CL place playing hoofball.

If you want to be competitive then pass and move is a must now.

Our board ****ed it up big time when they signed up Roy. Are they to stubborn to admit that or will they sack him and admit the mistake?

He must be sacked no question about that because the whole club is built around pass and move football and not hoofball.

If they want to keep our big stars then they must sack Roy now. They will walk if we continue to play negative hoofball and isn't challenging.

It's a big decision to make to sack Roy now but if our board do that then I at least will praise them because then they could swallow their pride for the best of the club.

****ing hell that's a hugely infuriating article. There's so many hholes in it I can't even be bothered starting. What a complete cunt Bascombe is.

As for keeping Roy...well Bascombe has been wrong about pretty much everything else so far, so fingers crossed about this too. Cannot take even half a season with that joker.

I don't mind giving Roy the money if he spends it on Ashley Young. He'll be a good player for any manager.

I'm guessing 'a Kop source' = Purslow. I hope once the new owners arrive they stop people at the club trying to denigrate Rafa. I know there isn't much positive to say about Roy but trying to make him look better by spuriously talking up the hard bits of his job is getting to sound pretty old now.

We need three or four players for that 20 mil, Young will set us back around 13-15 I reckon, and if Roys willing to spend 4m on Poulsen I suspect we might just be seeing Alonso at Liverpool, (Mikel Alonso that is)

I'd think they would look to get the full £20m for him to be honest (if not more).

He is a good player but I'm not sure he is what we need. That said with Roy in charge we seem to have so many problems it is difficult to know what to change first.

I think like everyone else I'd look at replacing Poulsen. But then we could at least give Lucas a try. If a player can pass in the DM/Sweeper/CM position then we could consider trying a more flexible defensive system (like Barcelona, Spain and Mexico) freeing the fullback sand perhaps making the deep lying nature of our team look slightly less pathetic.

In general I think we need intelligence, pace and someone who can head the ball more than anything else. Young I suppose at least fulfils one of those criteria.

That is where Houllier has been playing him, yeah. He seems to think he might make a world class player centrally and that he wasn't suited to a wide role. It will be interesting to see how he goes.
