Roy Hodgson is hoping NESV's takeover can give everyone a boost

Hodgson is hopeful Liverpool can escape from the relegation places when they play Blackburn at Anfield tomorrow and believes the arrival of the club's new owners and the feelgood factor they have brought can give everybody a lift which can only help against Rovers.

"Things really have not gone our way for a variety of reasons and that's why we find ourselves down at the bottom and desperately wanting to get away from there as soon as possible, yesterday let alone tomorrow," said the boss.

"But I think the new owners have already done a lot for the club. They have given the club a lift. Even before the Everton game, I think there was a certain buoyancy, a feel-good feeling that we could start to rebuild, to put things right and get ourselves on a good footing once again.

"Sunday gives us the ideal opportunity to do this. Unfortunately, Blackburn will have something to say about that. They won't be lying down and will be wanting to get a result.

"The good thing is that we showed against Napoli that we are far from dead as a club by doing as well as we have in our other Europa League games.
"I know all the players that get a chance to play on Sunday will be chomping at the bit to get out there and run, work and fight.

"What I am hoping for is a little bit of luck so the result goes our way - whether we play well or we play badly - and that we give ourselves a bit of breathing space in order to start rebuilding and try to move up the table rather than constantly finding ourselves marooned at the wrong end.

"We've got to keep going. The good thing is that I have not prejudiced that game [Blackburn] by forcing players to play three matches in a week, which could quite easily have prejudiced the chances of finding the intensity I'm looking for."

Roy Hodgson insists his Liverpool team need a win against Blackburn at all costs on Sunday to get their Premier League campaign back on track.

The Reds kicked off the weekend in 19th place with six points from eight games and could even be bottom of the pile by the time they take on Rovers at Anfield.

Hodgson drew encouragement from the performance of what was largely a fringe side in gaining a goalless draw away to Napoli in the Europa League on Thursday night but insists the result is all that counts on the domestic front to avoid the Reds becoming "marooned" at the wrong end of the table.

The former Fulham boss said: "What I am hoping for is a little bit luck so the result (against Blackburn) goes our way whether we play well or play badly.

"That will give ourselves a bit of breathing space in order to start rebuilding and trying to move up the table rather than finding ourselves marooned."
Hodgson can at least take heart from the performance of a team shorn of Steven Gerrard, Fernando Torres, Raul Meireles and Lucas Leiva - who were all rested - and Dirk Kuyt and Daniel Agger, unfit and unwell respectively.

It gave the likes of 18-year-old Jonjo Shelvey the opportunity to start his first competitive game for the Reds while Jay Spearing, 21, got another run-out in midfield.

"We have to be satisfied with that result and perhaps more satisfied with a good performance which got a result we deserved," added the Reds boss, who had an unsuccessful spell in charge of Blackburn between 1997 and 1998.

"If your squad is any good then your players will be able to step up to the plate and that was definitely the case on Thursday night as they stepped up to the plate and dealt with it - even Jonjo Shelvey, starting for the first time.

"We did it in a very tough atmosphere because Napoli is a very tough place to come and play at any time - it doesn't matter whether you are Inter Milan, Juventus or Liverpool.

"I know all the players who will get a chance to play on Sunday will be chomping at the bit to get out there and run and work and fight.

A liverpool manager asking for luck against Blackburn at home. Every word he utters makes me cringe......First he says we arent in a relegation issue, next we need luck to make sure we arent maroooned at the bottom.

Sooner or later we'll start getting the ball through to Torres, and sooner or later Torres will start to play again like we know he can and then it won't matter who the CBs are.

My take is, Hodgson is not good enough to build a challenging side here but should be able to secure a mid table position. At present he's struggling (obvious I know) and is not being helped by some of his top players. But in the long term he needs to be replaced by a proven successful manager (not easy I know) and maybe that's the answer in the short term as well. For me Martin O Neil is an obvious talented choice and is available, he is passionate and won't stand for mediocrity .

However, To get out of this mess now the players need to up their game, they were out fought by Everton, that would never have happened under Rafa. There is some real class in the team,Torres, Gerrard, Cole, Kuyt, etc it's time they showed it a bit more.

You see this is what I think Hodgsons whole tactics are

Sit deep, **** the ball to Torres and hope he beats 3 men and scores

Sounds a winner to me

I dont actually think Torres' form is that bad persay its the ****ing service that is totally ****e

There has been evidence in a couple of games that if he gets the ball in half decent areas he will threaten the goal, the disallowed goal against Sunderland and the chest control, shot & dummy v Everton. Both of those he made something out of hopeful balls and even the goal he scored against West Brom was conjured out of nothing really

I dont buy that, its the tactics that are killing Torres and I think he knows this

As for the other players well you are not going to see them fight and scrap when their instructions dont echo that

Its clear Hodgson doesnt press like Rafa did and his whole tactics of sitting deep concedes ground and possession until you get to the 18 yars box when he expects his players to start fighting for possession

People use to say that about Babbel but he was arguably the best rightback in the world during his first couple of seasons at Anfield

I see massive similarities between Kelly and Babbel and I think his career will follow similar paths to Markus' he will move inside in a couple of years then will go back out again

I dont expect to win because Roy wont encourage his players to press for the ball (which Blackburn will do all day)

Roy will concede ground and possession, which will play right into Fat Sams masterplan of getting more yardage than an American Football Runningback

Blackburn will push us further back (which we will gladly concede to) and then after the "5th tackle" Fat Sam will encourage them to toss the ball between the sticks and hope that someone carries it over the line

I agree. He'd find it a lot easier to start scoring if anyone ever made him a chance.

Our attacking has been absolutely dreadful and there is just one man to blame for that. It's worse than the worst of times under Houllier. At least then we were one-dimensional.

Hodgsons tactics makes Houlliers last season seem like a good time! I agree though that we will need to hit rock bottom before things change IMO and if we get beat and are bottom the crowd and fans will turn on roy there and then.

I agree totally. People have always said how it would be a shame for someone like Gerrard not to have a prem winners medal to complete his set and im sure that he himself has said that time is running out, this season under Roy the 'deluded clown' Hodgson never got started in that respect so him coming out in defence of the manager- vocally- leaves me flabbergasted.

Im seriously starting to doubt Gerrards intelligence if he feels that Roy can turn it around. He must believe all that sky ****e and be extremely cosey with Roys arm around his shoulder telling him 'how gweat he is' in CM.

As for Carragher, he ll loving Roys 'hoof ball' tactics as hes somewhat of a specialist in the art.
