Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.
May the Lord bless this post.

i'm off my head? We need a CM who has a range of passing, Meireles does exactly what you said short passing, quick link up, sure Lucas can do that already? Bit of diversity.
Stevie has everything, can burst forward and beat a man but also has a range of passing that Meireles doen't have which give us more options, and he can still score goals from CM.
Stevie can dictate the game far better than Meireles, he can control that midfield and get the ball up to Meireles and Torres & is much superior defensively.
Stevie has the edge on everything as regards Meireles, everyone is in agreement that Meireles needs central role, i feel that "at this time" it would be best served having Gerrard in CM with Lucas, Meireles is still getting used to the tempo and pace of the premier league, less risky playing him further forward. I don't trust him enough yet to give him a permanent CM role yet, and have that responsibility to help out the back line as well as get the ball the the frontline.
P.S. Ideally i would like to have Gerrard playing behind Torres, but i'd either want Meireles to have fully adapted to the league Or have a better player than Meireles there.

I actually think we need a bit more guile around the opposition box and that has always been the one weakness in Stevies game compared to an Aimar or Iniesta etc. He's best when able to be more direct, RM is his best position, then centre mid then 2nd striker, it's only been our dire lack of creative talent that's forced him into that role.
I haven't seen enough of Raul to be sure, but quick, accurate and intelligent short passing aligned with excellent touch/technique are the main qualities I look for in a 2nd striker and I'd hoped that Aqua, Cole and Raul would take this role from our Stevie and let him get back to what he's best at, explosive bursts, mid range passes and long shots."that is my opinion and that is more important than what anyone else has to say about it" - Mr A.Fergusson, Oct 2011

spot on, if Raul adapts and pushes on in the premier league in time i might feel much more confident in putting him in the crucial CM role, but until then i think Gerrard represents a better and much more stable/proven option in that position.
