It's far too simplistic to just look at goals and assists, and then use purely those stats to decipher who is a better player. There's far more to it.Originally posted by NigelLG View PostWell, football is about scoring goals no?
I don't know how you and Craig can measure a player's ability then, if you don't take into consideration his output such as goal scored / assists etc ... Maybe Cole does more stepovers than Yossi? Bicycle kicks?
In any case, if we don't agree on how to measure that, then let's agree to disagree, as you say.

Otherwise Andy Cole would be right up there as one of the greatest players in PL history. And we all know he wasnt.

Now, I'm curious how you'd get to your assessment then.Originally posted by Craig_H View PostIt's far too simplistic to just look at goals and assists, and then use purely those stats to decipher who is a better player. There's far more to it.

Seriously mate, I'd really like to know how you base your assumption that it's as clear as that, as it comes down to a matter of opinion in that case. The Cole /Yossi issue is clearly divided.
I also thought that we'd get the best deal in swapping Cole for Yossi, as he's 2 years younger and we've managed to recoup some money in the transaction, but it's also clear that Chelsea thought they'd get good value for him, if not I'm sure they wouldn't have vetoed a £5m deal for him.Are we winning?

Equally you saying he isnt better doesnt make it so. If everyone added IMO at the end of these statements then we'd all get along fineOriginally posted by Craig_H View PostNo he isnt.
You saying it, doesnt make it so.
IMO there's not much in it. Perhaps Joe Cole at his best is a better player than Benni but arguably over the past 3 seasons Benni has been the more effective player. IMO of course.'Religion is killing each other over who has the best imaginary friend'

He's strangling your serious football analyst image with cuddles. It's a clever tactic, you've got to agree.Originally posted by Craig_H View PostFFS sake dan, what are you trying to do to me?

Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.
May the Lord bless this post.

So you think goals/assists IS the only think to judge on then? Is that what you're saying?Originally posted by NigelLG View PostNow, I'm curious how you'd get to your assessment then.

So that makes lan Shearer and Andy Cole possibly two of the best EVER PL players and people like Tony Adams, Patrick Vieira etc, are therefore rubbish?
Whether or not Chelsea consider it good value, isnt really definitive of anything - they also thought the Shevchenko signing was good enough value to complete the deal.
As for my judgement, there's all manner of things to base it on, including intelligence on the ball, clever movement, awareness of individual responsibilities, decision-making, retaining possession, good use of possession, ability to adapt to a system & team mates....etc etc etc...need i go on?
Simplifying it down to goals and assists, IS actually almost a child-like way of doing it.

I have said it in more than one post that I don't think it comes down to only this (goals & assists) but they are a major criteria in analysing things. At the end of the day, someone can be an ace in keeping the ball, makes a lot of clever movements etc but it results in nothing, then that makes the player a bit inefficient don't you think?Originally posted by Craig_H View PostSo you think goals/assists IS the only think to judge on then? Don't try to imply something that I haven't said Craig. Let's just move on as we aren't going to agree on this.

That's what I said. They're both much of a muchness.Originally posted by Neil Young View PostIt seems to me you fellows are arguing over which OK player is slightly better than the other.
Flatter to deceive - check.
Fancy touches - check.
Quite good creatively - check.
Not brilliant - check.
Bit lightweight - check.
Injury prone - check.
The fact they swapped clubs, with neither club being unhappy with the deal, suggests to me there's f*ck all to choose between them.
Can't people just agree with me? Or am I on ****in' ignore?!

Because when one of my posts asked 'Yossi better than Cole?' - you replied:
His output (goal scored/assists etc) for the past 2 or 3 years prove that.
