I don't actually think he'll manage to do either, just wondered what it would take for fans to give Hodgson another season.
I think it would take a frontal lobotomy for me to give the old fool another season. It's highly unlikely we'll get 4th, even if most Premier League teams are dross, but it doesn't alter the fact that we're playing the worst football I've seen in half a century of watching Liverpool and he's an embarrassment to the club every single solitary time he opens his gob. He's got to go

IF Roy finishes top 4 then it would be harsh to sack him...

In the same way, IF Rafa DIDN'T get top 4, then it was fair for him to go..

I can't speak for other fans, but for me to support him in charge for another year, I would want to see the following areas addressed over the remainder of this season:
          • Stop lining up so deep and inviting teams to attack
          • Set out a formation that shows intent to win
          • Start players in positions where they have a chance to be effective
          • Pick teams based on merit not tenure or personality
          • Give some of the potential future stars regular opportunities to play
          • Cut out the self-serving comments in the press
          • Take responsibility for poor perfomances instead of publicly criticising players
          • Target and sign players that will improve the team
          • Publicly reject all approaches for all players regardless of whether they will leave or not

I'm sure there are others, but IMHO winning a trophy or finishing fourth is not enough if not accompanied by improvements in these areas also.

How about we finish 2nd, then sack him next year for coming 7th?

Hodgson is highly unlikely to achieve something this season to cause me to have a dramatic rethink about whether he is the right man for us long term. Neither 4th place nor a UEFA cup win would do that for me, at least not unless either was in a very convincing manner. Ultimately, as with all hiring/firing decisions it would depend on whether the alternative turns out to be better or not.
