I don't think we could ever get 2 players like Sami and Stephen Henchoz again to start a new season together. They played with a new keeper behind them like Sander (what if pepe leaves) and a new DM in Hamann in front of them. Gerard did a quite amazing job at turning us into a solid unit at the back in one go.

If we were to go out and get 2 centre backs of good quality. We need to get one that already plays in this country. Having a new centre back pairing can be quite daunting for the premiership.

Both Hummels and Subotic are miles better players than Cahill.

Hummels and Subutic haven't really been tested that much though tbf. The German league isn't that great of a standard.

Cahill has put in solid displays in the prem. We need to sort out a proper DM,right back cover for Kelly and a LB as well. Or else any centre back will be made to look poor at times.

- whilst long term it does need addressing - unless we are going to do a man city esque spending spree and spend £150m in the summer completley changing the team - then it isn't as important as the other areas we so clearly lack.

Right back is fine for me - Kelly and Johnson can fight out for that position, good competition for them both - Left back has too be improved....for me we have to sign an out and out first choice left back - and then i'd sell the konk and aurelio and bring insua back as cover - i'd then consider selling ayala and sending Wilson on loan to another Prem side, to see how he develops/copes with the game time - we should be ok for another season with agger/carra/skrtel/kyriakos. - if we do go on a spending spree and sort all the areas out then sell skrtel and sign a top class centre halfoh and sell darby

Midfield
replace Poulsen for a proper centre mid who can go straight into the first team
replace jovanovic for a proper left winger who can add some pace and quality down the left
sign a right mid who can create from that side.

Have gerrard meireles and the new centre mid battling out for first team starting XI and lucas providing good cover - new left mid with cover from cole - then make a decision on kuyt and maxi - sell one and keep the other as cover for the new right mid - and also shelvey coming through....midfield sorted - oh and sell spearing

Attack Suarez and Carroll sound......decision needed on Ngog and Pacheco!!! - if we have sorted out all of the above key areas and can address it then great - my thinking to be honest would be to sign another striker and keep kuyt (so maxi to be sold) and then have Suarez/carroll/new guy and kuyt as the forwards - then send both pacheco and ngog on loan to prem sides so we can see how they cope and develop.



That for me has to be our plan.....for me Bare minimum to just get us back competiting is a left back, centre mid, left mid, right mid.............with the current squad and those positions sorted we should be back in the mix....anything less than that, well to be honest it will just be more of the same next season and we would just be playing catch up - we've been so far behind for so long now, that we will never get near the top until we are prepared to do what is really required....we always seem to be two players short - if we don't do the above i'll be gutted....... - and if we have the money and want to have a real title push, as well a the bare minimum, we need to sign a top centre back and a better 3rd choice striker.

Skrtel is fine along side Agger. Skrtel and CArra playing alongside each other is suicide. They just done complimet each other, and neither is arielly dominant.
