How long do you give a new player..

Before i head to the leaba, i was thinking about this one today and its up for certain debate. How long do you give a new player to settle in before you can make a proper judgement on him and decide whether to cut loose or to give more time?

    Examples being:

    - Keane: got 6 months didn't play well but wasn't exactly treated well and was shipped out after 6 months, even when we had no replacements.

    - Lucas: Was so bad in his early career that so many of us (including myself) wanted rid asap regardless of age but now he has improved somewhat.

    - Dosenna: Was completely out of his depth from the very start of his premier league career and just wasn't suited to the league and never would have been.

    - Aqua: Injuries, lack of playing time but also looked not suited to the league and seems much more at home back in the slowe paced Serie A.

    - Meireles: Came into a low in confidence and IMO poor LFC squad, played out of position under a manager out of his depth. But also has looked shell shocked, terrible in posession and for all his tattoos and shave head, likes very timid.

So what do you take into consideration, age, change of country, language, which position he plays, playing style etc & when is the right time when you have to say, enough is enough and cut the cord?

    Opinions please?

At least a year if they're coming from a foreign league and are showing signs of being a good player (Meireles).

Sometimes you can judge them quicker if they're hopelessly out of their depth and simply not suited to the league.

I don't think you can put a timeframe on it. Every player is different, you'd need to look at their attributes and potential adaptability.
I saw a dead fish on the pavement and thought "what did you expect?"
There's no water round here stupid, should have stayed where it was wet

Interesting topic danp - i think alot of it boils down the players age, his experience and reputation built up at his previous club or clubs.

Lucas for example had a bit of experience with Brazil under 20s or whatever it was as well as with Gremio, but lets face it he was a kid coming over to Liverpool at 19/20 and it showed, certainly in his first season. I think in the case of Lucas, and players at a similar age coming over to Liverpool, they should be given a little leeway.

However with more experienced players and well known players, i'm not sure if the settling in period should be so long.
Of course they need to adapt to a new league, style and all that but if they've been doing it in another country for a number of seasons, then come to England and fall to pieces - questions would have to be asked.

I dont think there's any need for faffing about over this one, the simple genuine answer to the question is that it depends on the player and on the circumstances, and that there's no set single answer.
