The way one or two on this thread slagged off Dalglish before the game is both unbelievable and, frankly, unacceptable. Still, I suppose it just makes them look like idiots so maybe there's no real harm.

The beauty of it is that Raul is equally capable defensively, and has the tactical awareness and discipline to hold his position when needed, as well as go forward and threaten. And the same can be said of Lucas.

They could become a wonderful little pairing for us in there.

Agreed, think its pointless playing him behind Torres, he's a cracking DM so why have him anywhere else?

Kenny seems to really rate Shelvey, who IMO although early days is just so painfully slow its incredible, it genuinely looks uncomfortable when he has to break walking pace, but Kenny is giving him a lot of game time, as oppose to Cole!! Whats happened to there!? No a single minute of football since Kenny came in, bit strange for a guy with his talent, let alone his wage packet! But sure we're getting results, although last night was an average performance, wonder is it the end for Joey Cole?

Always thought that Cole was overrated. Kenny must have seen something from Shelvey because he has featured quite prominently since he took over. I am not really sold on the lad's lack of pace, I don't think that's pretty accurate. While he doesn't look to be the fastest around, I don't think he's that bad. He does seem to have a good engine, which does contradict that assumption.

Kuyt has a fantastic engine but he is a snail and even Shelvey makes Kuyt look like Usain bolt.

It doesn't contradict anything, having a good engine and having pace are two completely different things. And its not an assumption, Shelvey is slow as ****, thats not saying he can't be a good player. But he is in fact painfully slow without question

I think what it might be is a lack of game experience, which means he doesn't anticipate where the game is flowing. This means he is having to readjust and catch up. This fraction of a second makes it seem like he's slower, when actually he's just set off later. With games this will change.

I don't know about that. There was a point last night where he was running with the ball into space and, from pretty much a standing start, a defender caught up about three metres in less than ten and dispossessed him. It made me think "uh oh" and not just because he hadn't passed in time.

Could there be a distinct difference between his speed with and without the ball. There are some players (Henry and Ronaldo come to mind) who almost seem quicker with the ball but most players slow a fair amount, perhaps this is more pronounced in Shelvey?

Must be mate because IMO i can't fathom how anyone has not noticed how incredibly slow he is. But sure differents strokes for different folks mate

I think his decision making isn't the best, he seems to dilly dally with the ball, most probably because of lack of experience at this level. We need different kind of players in a team anyway, Alonso was slower than anyone I've seen for a long time but his quickness of thought allowed us to play at a great tempo. It's a bit of a silly discussion IMO.

Sure, that thought occurred. But he was shockingly slow, it looked like he was running in warm tar. It reminded me of my last ever 11-a-side playing central defence when I was in my late thirties and up against some nineteen year old striker - horrendous.
