    Rafa backs Kenny

    (and admits to mistakes...)

Former Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez has backed the appointment of Kenny Dalglish as interim Reds manager.

Benitez left the Anfield club in the summer and, after taking over at Inter Milan, has since been sacked by them.

Liverpool's fortunes have not fared much better as they have struggled in the Premier League and recently replaced Roy Hodgson with Dalglish.

"It will be much better with Kenny because he knows the club and what the fans want," Benitez told BBC Five Live.

Dalglish racked up eight league titles as a player and a manager with Liverpool between 1977 and 1991.

"He can talk with the players and they will feel and understand what it means to be a Liverpool player," added Benitez.

"I think that Kenny has been a very good appointment and, hopefully, it will be successful."

Liverpool finished seventh in the top-flight under Benitez last season as they missed out on a top four place and a spot in the lucrative Champions League.

The Merseysiders continued to flounder under Hodgson this season and are hovering close to the relegation zone.

Benitez has been criticised in some quarters for the quality of the squad he left behind but the Spaniard defended his transfer policy during his six years at Anfield.

The Reds won the Champions League in 2005 and the FA Cup in 2006, while they were Champions League runners-up in 2007 and Premier League runners-up in 2008-09 during his time in charge.

"We know that we made some mistakes," said Benitez. "We are not happy with some of the signings.

"But we are really pleased with the majority of them, especially if you analyse the team now. Reina, Johnson, Skrtel, Agger, Aurelio, Lucas, Torres, Maxi and Kuyt. It is a massive team.

"The team is good, the value of the squad is really good and, we were making mistakes, but [also] signing fantastic players.

"We signed Alonso, Luis Garcia, Javier Mascherano and Yossi Benayoun and we had to sell if we wanted to buy new players."

For all the players that went in and out of the club in 6 years the below is not a glowing list apart from the obvious two (Torres/Reina):

    One tit for another.

What about Alonso and Mascherano who he signed. Obviously for their reasons they left but they were still signings of the highest order.

It's an excellent team. Belief has been sucked out of them.
          Are we winning?

Today showed we do have good players and are miles better than the table suggests and many people think.

Interesting he still uses the "we"

It doesn't smart as much him not being manager anymore, with Kenny in charge. Still miss him though.

I was thinking of them too, but Rafa excluded them himself from his sentence. That still only totals 4 players.

Nigel, agreed belief has been sucked out of them no doubt and they will perform much better soon. But still doesn't make the list glow.

Not really the time or place for bring up old squad quality arguments is it? Nice to see Rafa's support and, aye it is easier to take he's gone now KK is back on charge.

There's an implicit dig at Woy from Rafa of course.
                  3rd place. Worst champions ever.

Saw this embedded in the BBC article about Rafa.

When Rafa was sacked he is on record as saying his replacement should be Kenny Dalglish. As ever the great board we had at the time thought his opinion wasn't worth listening to.

Rafa is one of us. To put it simply he understands.

I didn't expect anything else but for Rafa to back Kenny. It would be great imo if they could collaborate at some level.

we can add arbeloa, crouch while he was with us. luis while he was with us, Riera for one season was good, then became a tit (can accept that he was always a tit but the one season was a blip)

so i have got to 7 now.

                              Bit of an operatic duet?
