Third Man Running

I think this is worthy of its own thread as we can keep a lookout for this tactic in future games too.

Today, against Wolves, I saw lots of examples of third man running. Lucas, Miereles and even Poulson were displaying plenty. Obviously this is the way to play against the likes of teams who "like to pass the ball around" rather than sit back and defend.

I was thinking about this earlier this evening....

To me, it seems almost Chelsea-like... It's like the way Lampard ghosts into advanced positions and like Essien (only slightly further back) - i think Steve Clarke can take the bows for this...

Defo man, and i've said it a few times before but i think bringing Steve Clarke in was a brilliant move.

His influence can't be underestimated.

As Vermilion says, it's not a new thing. Our old sides used to do this loads. Dont think it has much to do with Clarke IMHO.

As mentioned in another thread, yes this is an old Liverpool technique which Dalglish played under. However, it allegedly doesn't work against teams that sit back. But as long as it gets us more points than we've been previously getting and keeps the football exciting I'm looking forward to more of it.

Yeah - i know. I remember Terry McDermott, Ray Houghton etc doing the same sort of thing...and, i'm sure this is to the forefront of Kenny's mind..


But, in the modern game, we haven't seen this from our team,, that's why i was attributing credit to Steve Clarke...

Not on about this third man running jazz, just in general i think Steve Clarke working with Kenny is a great thing.

I don't agree with you - i read an interview with Kenny, which said, he wasn't interested in being a coach, that's why he wanted somebody like Steve Clarke along side him..

I can't find the link, but, i'm sure it's there if i was sober enough to find it (which i'm not !)

I'm sure it was Kenny's vision and Clarke's persistance @ Melwood which has seen this transformation.

I guess my point is, we need to include Clarke's involvement when we hand out the brownie points..
