£35m striker Carroll in for Liverpool against United, but scare for captain Gerrard

Andy Carroll is standing by to launch his Liverpool career against their biggest rivals Manchester United - but without the help of captain Steve Gerrard.
Carroll, who has been recovering from a thigh injury since joining from Newcastle in January, could form a £58million strikeforce with Luis Suarez against United.

But Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish must decide whether to risk Gerrard, whose groin injury flared up again in the build-up to the clash at Anfield.
Gerrard, who only returned from a four-game absence at West Ham last weekend, is too important to risk. If he does sit out the match, defender Jamie Carragher is likely to be captain.
Carroll has yet to kick a ball for Liverpool since his £35m move but Liverpool are keen to see him against United's makeshift defence.

Crazy build up to this match. Could be a dream script for Carroll and Suaez, but it feels to me like for some reason it could go horribly wrong as well. Caroll limping off after 15mins/Suarez sent off for eating Wes Brown or something.

I feel much more confident about this game with KD in charge than I would have with RH at the helm. We need passion and energy to beat United and I believe that we have both in abundance.

On Sunday, Manchester United are at Anfield. Against the Red Devils, face to face with Liverpool’s demons, Raul Meireles will need his dragon.

He knows it, too. His eyes are wide, his tone disbelieving, when he discusses the intensity, the sheer, relentless physicality which pervades the Premier League. “The kicks here,” he exclaims. “Ooph. The game never stops. Everything is a battle.”
