I'm not sure the retirement part of it is strictly correct. I found and translated this article earlier:

Roque, only 22 years, suffering from a tumor of grade I-II in the pelvis so it will undergo surgery in the coming days. Noteworthy is the courage of the player who decided to appear at a news conference before the media to give myself the sad news.

"I have been informed that I have a tumor in the clavicle grade 1-2 and doctors have told me what I need to remove but are optimistic. Unfortunately for me the season is over," Roque claimed shortly before the tears prevented him keep talking. And, without doubt, the Catalan player faces his toughest match, beating cancer.

As explained by Dr. Tomas Calero, doctor of all Betis, forecasts are optimistic and has set a deadline of 15 days to decide on treatment. "I just want to highlight the strength of Miki when we gave the news, gave a lesson to us all," he said.
Either way it's terrible news and I wish him all the best.

Really hope the lad makes a full recovery, there seems to be a lot of depressing things in football at the minute.
I think it's a foul, and if the ref gives it. He got to give a penalty. I know it's outside the box, but you see them given that close to the area. So if the ref gives it he's got to give the penalty as it so close to the area. But I think it's a penalty. Robbie Savage 8/11/06

                          former Liverpool player Miki Roque

Real Betis defender Miki Roque, a former Liverpool youth player, needs surgery on a malignant tumour in his pelvis.

Roque, 22, was at Anfield between 2005 and 2009 and was part of their FA Youth Cup winning team in 2006.

He also appeared as a first-team substitute in a Champions League match against Galatasaray in December 2006.

“The doctors are hopeful it’s not too far advanced,” Roque said, adding that he would be out for the rest of the second-division season.

Roque also had spells at Oldham Athletic and Spanish sides Xerez and Cartagena.

Xabi Alonso, the player Roque replaced in the Galatasaray game, sent a message of support to his former team-mate on his personal Twitter account.

“They have found a tumour in the pelvis of Betis and former Liverpool player Miki Roque,” Alonso, now at Real Madrid, wrote.

                          “A big hug for him.”

Liverpool also expressed their sadness at the news and wished the player a speedy recovery on their club website before Sunday’s showdown with Manchester United.
