Gerrard was more disciplined yesterday that he normally is with his marauding role. He seemed more aware of the need to keep hold of midfield and the game.

I noticed at one point early in the second half when he was screaming at the defence to move further up filed, nearer the halfway line to compact the game. Kygriakos was resisting obviously afraid of doing so with his lack of pace but Gerrard persisted and got Reina to come out more a sweeper to help Kyrgiakos.

I was really impressed with the leadership and maturity he showed.

He was very disciplined to be fair, but his passing was poor again and some of his decision making wasn't what it should be.
A confident Gerrard does things instinctively but yesterday he looked indecisive on the ball and played within himself.

As for showing leadership, he does it well at times and other times very poorly. You just don't know what to expect from him as a Captain from one game to another.

God read and backs up what a lot of people say about Kuyt being such an intelligent player, not just a 'workhorse'.

I noticed the Lucas tackling stat myself yesterday, that's surely a bit misleading. I thought he broke up play loads of times and made a good few crucial tackles/interceptions, although how accurate these particular types of stats are has been discussed before. Plan on watching the game tonight again, so will keep an eye out.

As a stat fan I know that for a tackle to be considered won the team need to end up winning the ball, so a player can win the tackle but if the opposition get the ball, for example thanks to a throw in or a corner or 30 yards away then the stats will say that he lost the tackle.

So he could win a tackle but it could be counted as a lost one.

Just finished watching the game again, them stats really should be gassed. Twice Lucas won the ball, once between him and Carra and we retained posession, then again although the ball went to a United player in a safe position and both were marked as lost. A few of the other ones he didn't even go for the ball or touch the man, just got himself in positon to put the man off. He won another clean tackle in the box that just didn't register one way or another. Bizarre. Not one slide though (well one and it was a good tackle, but play was called back for an earlier foul).

Good all round defensive display though, even early on he ushered Nani out of play quite easily.

Didn't realise how good Meireles second clearance off the line was. He was at the near post when a corner came in, moved out as we tried to clear the ball, but as soon as he seen United were about to throw the ball back in from the other side, he intelligently ignored the ball and darted to the post, making a crucial clearance. I previously just thought he was already standing on the line.

At 2-1 we might have crumbled.

Noone has really mentioned it yet but I wouldn't mind making a shout out to Maxi for this performance in the game. In this type of game its so so important to have the kind of players to keep the game ticking alone, making runs off the ball to create space and just generally moving the ball on quickly rather then dwelling on it while your team is on the front foot. His late runs in midfield caused so many problems and he seemed to keep Rafael well back in their own half for the majority of the game.

Exactly what we need from him, he doesn't have to be a star he just has to do his job and make sure he creates the space for the big stars and keep the ball moving quickly.

Did Lucas not have one of the best success rates for tackles two seasons ago though? Who compiled those stats, because I’m nearly sure it was in the high 80’s which would be impossible with this criteria.

Very good shout Ferandinho, he put in a good shift. Bar two poor shots he didn’t do much wrong but a lot of his good work generally goes unnoticed. Good runs, tracked back well and used the ball wisely. Typical Maxi really.

Got a bit of criticism in the match thread, but I suppose people need something to complain about.

It's something I doubt we'll see often, but it looked like him and Aurelio could have been a good pairing on the left.

Jamie Carragher was refused entry to the Manchester United dressing-room on Sunday after attempting to apologise for the challenge which left Nani with a gash so deep that the winger’s shin bone was visible through the open wound.

Nani will discover on Tuesday whether he will be sidelined until next month as a result of the injury inflicted by Carragher’s first-half tackle during the 3-1 defeat at Anfield - which resulted in referee Phil Dowd brandishing a yellow card to the Liverpool defender.

Although Carragher made efforts to show his remorse for the injury suffered by Nani, United’s coaching staff turned the 33 year-old away due to the anger within the United camp, not only with the challenge, but Dowd’s failure to dismiss the former England defender.

Steven Gerrard’s actions in urging the injured Nani to "get up" while he lay on the ground with the injury clearly visibly also infuriated United’s players and staff.
Anger at Carragher’s challenge also spread to the directors’ box, where United chief executive David Gill remonstrated with Mike Riley, head of Premier League referees, over Dowd’s response to the incident.

Nani, who was stretchered off as a result of the injury, left Anfield on crutches and United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is already preparing to be without the Portugal international for Saturday’s FA Cup quarter-final tie against Arsenal at Old Trafford.
