I don't see why Jay Spearing can't be that type of player for us. He's not on mega wages and he's also HG. Many positives. Is he top class? No. Is he ever likely to challenge for a first team place on a regular basis? No - We need better.

But squad players are key during a long hard season and Jay showed today that he does have a chance of being one of those players for us.

Exactly the point I was going to make. Never going to be a starter, but very useful in the squad.

We will need to control midfield and when he plays we can't do that because he simply isn't good enough.
I think with the amount of positions we need to improve we should keep hold of Spearing. I'd bring in one Central midfielder but the one I'd let go would be Poulsen, who no doubt is on a much higher wage than Jay and IMO is a worse player.

A midfield 5 of Gerrard, Meireles, Lucas, Spearing and one other (Adam) wouldn't be a bad selection to pick from. I don't see how we could keep people happy if we let Spearing go and added another top midfielder, say like M'Vila as well as swapping Poulsen for Adam.

I think central midfield is where we desperately need more options, one decent game from Spearing doesn't change that at all. We have just 3 cm's that are good enough, Spearing isn't one of them.

We'll bring in one, likely Adam. I don't think we'll bring in another. Poulsen out and One in.

            I actually think we will.

Adam hopefully and either M'vila or Sissoko.

i can see that too. if we spent 5/6million on Adam then could easily see us spening big on another midfielder.

Same here. If Lucas or Adam (if that happens) got injured we with left pretty much nobody to fill the void.

Our squad need improvement and getting rid of Poulsen and buying only one playmaker type of CM will only partially do the trick.

Imo we need one more defensively inclined CM.

                  It was my best yet

Jay Spearing today reflected on the best game of his Liverpool career at Sunderland and vowed to try and repay the faith shown in him by Kenny Dalglish.

The Wirral-born midfielder said the Scot has given him a lot of personal confidence and he is eager for more first team action.

"For myself it was a massive occasion and from a personal point of view I would have to say that was my best game so far for Liverpool," Spearing told Liverpoolfc.tv.

"I felt a lot more settled and confident about myself and got straight into the game from the start.

"I enjoyed it out there. I was involved in the penalty incident and almost scored my first goal for Liverpool but their 'keeper made a good save.

"I caught it quite sweet but it was a left footed shot, so don't expect that every week!

"The result was the main thing and the team performance was really good. We want to go on a run now until the end of the season and see where that takes us."

Spearing made his first start in the top-flight at the Stadium of Light last year when he featured in a defensive holding role and his appearance this term was much more memorable.

He added: "I made my first start in the Premier League at Sunderland last season and it didn't go as well as we wanted with the beachball incident, but I felt a lot more at home this time.

"It's a year on from that game and I've been working hard since then and I feel a lot more confident in myself.

"The new manager has given me a lot of confidence. He started me in the derby at Anfield and he has shown he has got a lot of belief in me.

"He knows the type of player I am and what I can do.

"Any player that has the confidence of the manager gets a massive confidence boost. It has just made me want more and with the manager's belief I can go on and do better things.

"At the end of the day I've got to try my best and take every day as it comes and hopefully play as much as possible.

"The boss told me well done and he was pleased with everyone because it was a great team performance.

"We were a solid unit right the way through and we deserved all the three points."

Spearing also revealed his display got the seal of approval from captain Steven Gerrard who contacted him after the game.

"The lads were all made up for me and told me well done after the game, and they helped me a lot during the 90 minutes," he added.

"Stevie texted me after the game to say I had done well. He always speaks to me and gives me encouragement and advice, so to receive something like that from someone who has done so much for this club is a massive boost."

Liverpool's No.26 has now targeted more first team involvement and try and show people he is worthy of a regular place.

He added: "I have been around the first-team a few years now but it has been in and out, and I've been regularly involved this season.

"I know what I've got to do to try and stay in the manager's thoughts. First of all I've got to perform like I did on Sunday in every game.

"That proved I can play at that level and as I said the manager has given me a lot of confidence. I've got to pay that back now and keep it going.

"If I keep on playing like that then I don't see why I can't get more games, but I know what I have to do."

I've been calling for him to start in certain games but at the same time i haven't had a great deal of faith in him.

Now every dog has it's day and we can't go OTT but Spearing's performance today was very encouraging. He kept us ticking over and sprayed the ball around nicely. Confidence grew as the game went on.

Should see more action between now and the end of the season, for sure.
Never mind Spearing, think you've been too quick to write Gerrard off
