If he wasn't a local lad then he would have been sold without any doubt at all.

No chance that he would get a new deal if he wasn't a local lad. He isn't any better than players like Poulsen, El Zhar and Konchesky.

It shouldn't matter a bit if the player is local or not but without any doubt it do.

Hopefully the contract extension means that we'll get £350k rather than £300k from Hull

I don't have too much of a problem with it to be honest, he doesn't look as though he's capable of being a regular, but he can do a job.

In fairness we aren't going to be able to overhaul both the first team and the squad and get rid of all the players that many people deem aren't good enough this summer, so some of these players will stick around for the time being. Spearing is a player who will be on relatively low wages, who will give his all when he plays and isn't too upset that he doesn't play every week. I'd much rather have him here next season than Poulsen.

Benitez made a big mistake keeping him all that time then?

shocking decision to give him a contract extension - clearly not what we need and it just smacks of a bit of local sentiment from the club - and that's coming from someone from the wirral and spearing is from just down the road.

Nothing against the lad at all and it's nothing to do with his height...just ability - for me we have lucas/gerrard/meireles and we need one other a battler/tackler to replace the hapless poulsen.....and then we have room for one more....a younger player coming through to offer cover and develop - and Shelvey is ahead of spearing for me....younger and more potential.

If we had replaced mascherano properly (ie not signed poulsen) Spearing wouldn't have played at all...the only reason he has featued is due to injuries(gerrard and shelvey who was getting picked ahead of spearing under kenny till he got injured) and how shockingly bad poulsen is (fans will boo poulsen but no matter how bad, we'd never boo a young local lad who does, to be fair try is best)

Jay Spearing is understood to be close to signing a new three-year deal with Liverpool after impressing Kenny Dalglish.
The 22-year-old made his debut for the Reds back in 2008 and there had been some concerns over whether the diminutive Scouser would be able to make an impact at first-team level.
But Spearing has flourished under Kenny Dalglish and, having started the last two Premier League games, looks to have a long-term future for the club and a new deal looks to be in the offing.
Dalglish told the Liverpool Daily Post: "Jay is a fantastic character. From working with him I've seen things I didn't notice about him before.
"To get a young boy in the squad challenging for positions is great for everyone connected with the football club. It gives everyone a lift."
The manager feels it is an added bonus to have a "local lad" making an impact at Anfield and Spearing, who has made 13 appearances this season, is close to committing to the club.
