With all respect, Lucas has proven his worth to the team over the past couple of years.

He's a much better player than Spearing will ever be.

Spearing did well tonight, but I'm still far from convinced he has a long term future at the club.
A humble guy with healthy desire.

Jay is where Lucas was a couple or so years back. Up and down form wise but one who kept his head down and was fair enough to hold his hands up when he didn't meet the required standard, as Jay did last week.

But let's be fair now, Lucas plays for Brazil. Spearing is nowhere near the England squad.

I always thought Spearing would be a decent understudy to Lucas. Both are good short passers and decent in the tackle, although Lucas is a very intelligent player. They were also both more attack minded players when younger and against weaker opposition, but have had to change their style to succeed in the PL.

I can the similarities in the two and half understand the previous poster, but Lucas is the much better player and always will be.
If we are all only happy when we are really winning in the end, when your race finishes, what life would that be?

I think the problem has been that against WBA he was the exact opposite of how he was tonight. He was timid and stand offish, he never closed down and he ran around like a headless chicken. Tonight he did close down and his movement was intelligent. If he can show more performances like tonight he could have a role at the club.

My feeling is that there is something telling about the disjoint between our form against **** teams away and good teams wherever (at least since Kenny arrived). We lack someone to take charge of the midfield and when we have to think about the oppositions and don't have to concentrate on a physical battle we do well. I think the lack of acceleration and physical presence of Spearing and Lucas give lesser teams hope even if a game of football breaks out they might be superior to most.

Again like the Sunderland game today suggested that there could be a future for Jay at the club but I still remain concerned about the CM positions in terms of making a challenge for CL or more next season.

Still good to see academy players acquitting themselves well.

Love the way he keeps the ball moving by rarely taking more than two touches. For Kuyt's goal, his quick pass put Aurelio in. This means our whole play is quicker, meaning more opportunities are created.

I think the problem against West Brom was that the ball bypassed midfield at every opportunity, playing four centre backs meant the ball went high every time.

I think Spearing gets a lot of unfair criticism, alot seems to stem from his lack of stature. Man City are challenging in the top four and their midfield cost multi-millions, yet Lucas and Spearing completely owned them.

Who would have thought that Yaya Toure and Jay would be a total mismatch, in our favor..

I stand by my comments on Lucas. I accept that he has got better and there are things he does very well now but he offers nothing offensively. Never has and never will. Can't make an incisive forward pass, can't cross and can't shoot. Carra will score again before Lucas. (comical comment to prove a point!)

At this moment neither are really good enough if we want to truely kick on to the next level. But at least Jay would be happy to play a more reserve roll.

I agree overall but Spearing is clearly a much shorter passer than Lucas.
                              .
Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

May the Lord bless this post.
