Another assured display from Jay bar the penalty, he and Lucas have formed a good partnership and more than held their own against both City and Arsenal which are two of the stronger teams when it comes to central midfield. Still surprised by the amount of posters against giving him a new contract, when it seemed a nobrainer to myself.

new contract is a no-brainer - once everyone is fully fit + new signings he will be a squad player, keep him as he's capable and it's not as if we're blessed with talent we can easily discard.

I need to see more of him before I make up my mind. I'll wait till the end of the season on this one.

Nowhere near as bad as people make out.

I don't see why Jay Spearing can't be that type of player for us. He's not on mega wages and he's also HG. Many positives. Is he top class? No. Is he ever likely to challenge for a first team place on a regular basis? No - We need better.

But squad players are key during a long hard season and Jay showed today that he does have a chance of being one of those players for us.
I stand by what I said before. The only thing I will add is that he's closer to proving he can be a regular squad player for us. But as the Arsenal game was only about his sixth league game or so for us, I can't see how people would expect him to be the finished article with immidiate effect.
                          Forwards.......

Good point, you forget how little he's played. He's come on leaps and bounds in that time.

When we buy any player, they deserve a bit of time to see if they adjust. Circumstances dictate how long that player should get.

It's no different for a young lad from the Academy. I think Jay has shown enough to convince people he is deserving of staying on as a squad player. It's now down to him to further enhance that view, and to attempt to take himself further up the pecking order.

And a further benefit is this. Even if he doesn't quite make it, or decides to move on in an attempt to further his career, we could well pocket a decent transfer fee.

The youngsters should be given every chance to crack it.

My opinion of him hasn't really changed much but to be fair I could see him as a bench option, which wasn't the case before.
