Sorry, I just didn't see it - all I see in Spearing is running around and waving his arms around like a demented windmill.

Championship player at best for me - if that's the type of player we can expect to see regularly in a Liverpool shirt, then we better get used to finish mid table year in year out.

I think the problem with Spearing is he isn't one thing or another he isn't a holding player or an attacking player, people see him as a DM but he isn't a DM in the mold of Hamann, Mascherano or even Lucas, he's more a Sissoko type player who harries and hassles opposition players. I think he's a good squad player and he's shown more than some of our other central midfielders this season, and IMO he deserves his place in the side at the moment.
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

what a strange comment. you do realise he's only playing every week and being asked to fill in the role that lucas usually occupies? him and lucas together complimented each other very well. he's a great little player. but he can't do that role as well as lucas probably due to his lack of presence. out of shelvey, gerrard, adam and henderson he's easily the best we have for that role. when lucas returns he'll drop out. but he's a good squad player to have, reasonable wages, good attitude and a good ball playing footballer.

We'll agree to disagree on this one - Henderson would be a better option for me, but there we as fans all have opinions.

I still stand by my original comment though!!!

He isn't sorry, but he is a very average player. Lucas carried him and Spearing isn't remotely close to Lucas in ability. He is pretty much playing by default but his positioning and his covering are terrible. He really is just a championship player.

as I said, he isn't an out and out defensive midfield player. so yes he gets caught out of position. i seem to remember people having a go at gerrard when he's been asked to play the same role. who do you suggest out of the players we currently have available plays instead then?

I stand by the fact that on the ball, he is one of our better footballers.

Exactly right, I was raging with him yesterday, beyond hopeless. He's a fraud.

I think that's harsh. For me he suffers from two things; firstly a lack of experience and secondly, a bit like Joe Cole, he seems to think running is of itself a useful on the pitch. If he's going to play DM he needs to learn discipline, it's not an easy thing to learn I suspect.

I think Jay is a better player than the slating he is getting here suggests. At the same time though I think he's ill suited to the team at present - both as he's not ready to play lone DM but also because he seems part of the problem of the personality of our team where no one seems capable of playing calmly and to a plan.

It was harsh - I was still angry post-Wigan game. However I stand by what I said about that performance - it was a fraudulent performance. He ran around waving his arms about, doing absolutely nothing. Wigan had multiple spells during the game when we couldn't get the ball off them and they passed it all around us to cries of "ole!" from the smattering of Wigan fans in the Anny Road. We couldn't get near them, and for one of those spells they had 10 men on the pitch and we still couldn't get near them. All this while we were losing the game.

It was highly embarrassing. No-one pressed, no-one tackled. Spearing was at the heart of all this, with a lot of pointless running around and pretend, half-arsed attempts to win the ball. Your point about positional discipline is absolutely true, and he is a so-called defensive midfielder who doesn't really defend and offers precious little protection.

Jay is one of those average players who some how ended up being a first team regular, we have a few of those.

Is it possible that he was running around looking stupid because no one else was pressing. I mean, you could stick the best DM in the world in the middle of 11 Wigan players and pass it round him all day.

Im not defending what was a bad performance, just looking for reasons as to why.

TBF mate, that is what he does every game.

Jay must be wondering how he has gone from being on loan at Leicester (and not starting every game) to being the saviour of the Liverpool FC midfield.

Ridiculous notion to expect him to come in and dominate the midfield. He's a decent player being asked to carry the Liverpool midfield as a DM.

When Lucas was being asked to be a DM in his younger years he was sat next to either Masch or Alonso, with Gerrard in front of him.

Jay is being asked to play with either Adam or Gerrard with Suarez in front of him.

And that's without going into the difference of quality in other positions on the pitch.
                              Forwards.......

Just watched MotD to see the 'highlights' again.
A bad day again for Jay. Watch both goals. Just not good enough from him.
Ben Arfa get away from him on the first and past him on the second far to easily.
Now that we are fighting he seems out his depth, but with the injuries we have I cannot see any other options than to keep playing him. Worrying weeks ahead, but as with others he needs to find a way to stop the rot.
