Paul Lambert: Dani Pacheco debut as good as they get

Michael Bailey Saturday, April 2, 2011
    6:48 PM

Paul Lambert believes the debut of young Spanish loanee Dani Pacheco was as good as he has seen.

The Liverpool and former Barcelona youngster was too hot to handle as Norwich City ran relegation-haunted Scunthorpe United ragged at Carrow Road on Saturday afternoon, hammering the 10-man visitors 6-0.

Hat-tricks from Grant Holt and second-half substitute Simeon Jackson decided matters for second place City, while Pacheco’s performance will have eased the sight of Wes Hoolahan limping out with a hamstring injury.

That could mean Hoolahan, who was also on top form against the Iron, is a major doubt for next weekend’s mouth-watering clash with automatic promotion rivals Swansea City in Wales.

“I thought from the off we were outstanding,” said Lambert, who was delighted with the debut of on-loan Liverpool star Dani Pacheco.

“The tempo of the game was great, the new lads have certainly given the place a lift and the way we played was excellent.

“I thought his debut was as good as I’ve seen. I thought he was brilliant, he lifted the crowd.

“The hype about him was over the top. People thought he was just going to come in here like Lionel Messi. He’s only a 20-year-old kid learning the game, but I thought his performance was fantastic.”

As for Scunthorpe manager Alan Knill, taking charge of his first game since leaving Bury on Thursday, the defeat did not knock his sense of humour.

““I’ve been in one day, watched training Friday and it confirmed what I thought,” he said. “When a team is second from bottom, you know there are some problems and I knew that when I came.

“I think we can definitely be better than that. It’s extremely difficult with 10 men against a really good side, but the good thing is I’ve only got (Championship leaders) QPR next Saturday.”
Maybe the only bright note for us today then. Well done Dani - keep up the good work.

I'm still perplexed how with some much deadwood throughout the squad he wasn't able to get any playing time.

Me too. His only chances to shine came in patched up teams, in ****ty, nothing games, often out of position or for just a few minutes at the end. I still believe in him and want to see him given a run of meaningful games in strong XIs.

          Shocking isn't it?

10 minute cameo here and there and at the age of 20 to be almost single-handedly blamed and used as a scapegoat whenever we lost with him in the line up.

I'm not so sure he'd do any worse than some of the older "squad" players who've been given ample number of opportunities and failed time and time again but I am certain that he could have influenced the game and improve our chances on the pitch more than any of those useless squaddies.

He still may not be good enough but compared to those fringe players he's miles more promising proposition.

@briankettle One of my mates is a season ticket holder at Carrow Road and was at the game. Said that Pacheco played like Messi today.

Looking forward to seeing how he played tonight on The Football League Show
We managed to rectify it, though, because it now says, "Cook" where it once said "Cock", and "Pass" where it once said "Piss", so it’s slightly less rude.

Get him in our team now FFS.

We've nothing to play for so we might as well bring him back and give him a run of games with the likes of Suarez and Carroll in the team.

He was subbed at 70 minute with standing ovations. I'm sure there was a good reason for that.

from a google search of norwich football forum

How good was Pacheco today. Great reception from the crowd and loved the way all the
players keep hugging him. Must be one of the best debuts I've seen at Carrow Road, loving the killer final ball. Thought Lansbury responded well to being benched and maybe having some of the limelight taken away from him with his performance today. Really pleased for Jackson as well, all in all a fab day to be a Norwicher.

I thought Pacheco took a lot of the heat of Wes - he was no longer the only one to stifle
The other players seemed to lift their game as well - I saw a lot of little tricks and flicks that I wouldn't have expected before.

I know it was only Scunthorpe, and they had 10 men for a lot of the game, but I thought he still had another gear had we have needed it.

looks like he had a decent game there - let's hope he continues until the end of the season and works damn hard pre-season (if he's still with us)

If still at Anfield next season it's probably going to be his last chance to break through into the 1st team squad

Anyone know where he played and in what formation? Looked like left midfield in a 4-4-2?
