The intensity level on that photo seems very high for the light training session.

Then on the other hand, it may be only an optical illusion as Carroll is playing ultimate frisbee

Fans can't Kop the blame for Hodgson leaving, says Dalglish

Kenny Dalglish has told Roy Hodgson he cannot blame Liverpool fans for his Anfield exit.

The current Reds boss is adamant the loyal Kop following DIDN'T drive his predecessor out of the club, despite Hodgson's claims to the contrary.

The pair were close friends for years before teaming up on Merseyside, but they will speak for the first time since the axe was wielded - and Dalglish was rushed in place as temporary boss in January - when Liverpool visit West Brom this afternoon.

Back then, Hodgson complained bitterly that he had never been accepted at Anfield, with the clear inference that the presence of Dalglish in the directors' box turned the fans against him.

Even skipper Steven Gerrard suggested earlier this week that his former boss found it hard to fit in because the fans seemed to have been presented with a choice between Hodgson and Dalglish in the summer, and clearly wanted the latter.

Now inspiring a revival at the Hawthorns, Hodgson still finds it hard to reflect on his six month ordeal at Anfield before getting the sack.

When he left he complained bitterly: “The fans were making it perfectly clear they wanted me gone and somebody else in. I can’t for one minute suggest I was wanted at Liverpool.”

Clearly, that person was Dalglish, who had thrown his hat into the ring when Liverpool were looking for a successor to Rafa Benitez back in the summer.

Even though he didn't get the job, he remained in the directors' box as an advisor to Hodgson, and many felt that hardly strengthened the manager's position.

But King Kenny believes the fans are NOT to blame for the disaster that struck at Anfield, and that Hodgson was given the backing he needed.

And he also insisted that his friendship with the man he comes face to face with this afternoon, will not be broken by one setback, after stretching back over 30 years.

“Everybody has their own opinions on individuals. We can’t dictate how someone is going to be remembered by football fans,' he explained

“But no Liverpool supporter wishes bad on anybody who’s employed by or working for the club - everyone wants them to do well.

“Everybody wants them to do the best they possibly can and we want them to do well. If they do that, then everyone’s happy.”

No matter their motivation, it was clear that a vocal section of the fans did turn swiftly against the previous manager - departing from Anfield tradition in the process.

They made it clear they would settle for nothing less than the removal of Hodgson in favour of the Kop idol, and there was massive rejoicing when that belatedly happen.

But Dalglish argued yesterday that when he looks his friend in the eye this afternoon, he will do so with a clear conscience.

“I said at the time, and when I came in, that I’ve always been here to help the football club.

“The most important person is the guy in charge and that guy always maintains the respect of the people at the club.

“The man who sits in the chair is the most important one and the one who everyone would support. As far as I know, it has not been any different.

“I had a good close relationship with Roy when he was here and that is on record as well.

“He’s a really good man who I’ve been friendly with him for plenty of years and still am. I’ve not spoken to him since he left but I’m looking forward to seeing him again.”

Dalglish will decide this morning whether to put Gerrard back into the team, after the skipper came through a week of training following his surgery on a groin problem.

But he is likely to start with the same team that won at Sunderland, keeping his captain in reserve from the bench.

King Kenny's support reigns supreme, admits Hodgson

Roy Hodgson says Liverpool must make Kenny Dalglish their permanent boss after warning his iconic status will make it impossible for anyone else.

Hodgson, 63, lasted just six months at Anfield after beating Dalglish, 60, to the job last summer to replace Rafa Benitez.

But he was quickly axed in January by the Reds’ new owners NESV, who made former Liverpool striker and manager Dalglish caretaker.

Now Dalglish is in talks with the club’s US owners about a long-term contract on Merseyside.

And, Hodgson says from his own experiences at Anfield, Dalglish should get the post as the club’s fans want him in charge.

Hodgson said: “If they don’t give him the job now, it will be a very difficult job for the next man who gets it because the fans want him to have it.

“He has the backing of the fans and the fans are very important at Liverpool.

“I went to the right club but perhaps I didn’t arrive at the right time.

“Kenny made it clear he wanted the job and I knew that from the moment I walked in.

“But the people who were making the decisions at that time decided to go for me.

“It left Kenny in a difficult position because he wanted the job.

“And when things didn’t go well having him in the background wasn’t easy.

“It wouldn’t have been easy for any coach - it is difficult to compete with icons.”

Since Hodgson was sacked, Liverpool have sold unhappy striker Fernando Torres to Chelsea and brought in Andy Carroll and Luis Suarez for £58million.

And Hodgson revealed he was eying up the pair before he got the chop.

He added: “They have spent the money wisely and think it was a good move both for Liverpool and Fernando.

“Fernando needed a change and welcomed a change so he has got a change to one of the best teams in the world.

“And Liverpool have got two outstanding front players who are raring to go and spent the money so wisely.

“Carroll and Suarez, who I scouted, were on a list of players we were considering.

“Carroll was the most wanted striker in English football and Suarez was on everyone’s list after the World Cup and his time at Ajax.”

But despite being unable to spend that cash, Hodgson insists he is not bitter about his brief reign.

He added: “I don’t regret taking the job, even now.

“The job was there, I was offered it, I knew the risk, the potential problems that could arise, and I don’t harbour any regrets or any resentment.

“I knew I was taking a risk because there was a change of ownership in the air and in order to win the fans over we would have to have a flying start.

“When you don’t get that you are at risk especially when a man of Kenny Dalglish’s iconic stature is waiting in the wings and prepared to take over.”

Hodgson is unsure as to what reception he might get from the visiting fans today though as they never took to him.

He said: “The reaction to my appointment from a large body of fans was not positive.

“I don’t know whether that will have changed now I am no longer there.

“It would be nice if their response was not a negative one but if it is I will have to learn to live with it.

“I worked very hard for the club.

“The results were not what the club or the fans wanted and as a result I paid for it with my job, but I don’t think I did anything to upset them, certainly I hope I didn’t.”

Hodgson faces Liverpool today after receiving from welcome praise this week from both Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher.

He said: “If ever a player is brave enough to come out publicly and say things about an ex-manager it is always very satisfying.”

And Hodgson hopes fans can now at least appreciate some of his work at Anfield as much-criticised signings like £11million Portuguese midfielder Raul Meireles have subsequently come good.

He said: “It takes time for players to settle in.

“I thought he was getting better all the time and becoming in tune with the Premier League.

“I always thought he was a quality player who would grace the Premier League and help Liverpool to become a better team and I am pleased to see that is the case.”

                                December 10, 2010

Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson insists there is no truth in the rumours linking AC Milan star Ronaldinho with a move to Anfield.

                                Ronaldinho

Hodgson denied speculation linking both Ronaldinho and Ajax captain Luis Suarez, and although he admitted he was a long-term admirer of Aston Villa winger Ashley Young, he insisted there had been no communication between the clubs.

"Ronaldinho and Suarez are players who we have never even thought about
but I would think there is not a manager in the Premier League who has not given Ashley Young a thought at some stage or another," said Hodgson.

"But giving a player a thought, and thinking, 'This is a good player', and signing him are two vastly different things. I could give you quite a long list of players in the Premier League who I admire and think are very good, but there is no truth in the rumour.

"If you are asking if there are any negotiations taking place between Aston Villa and Liverpool, then there aren't."

Hodgson revealed there were also plans to award midfielder Lucas Leiva a new contract.

"A couple of weeks ago, Damien Comolli mentioned to me about him wanting to get in touch with Lucas's agent to discuss a new contract, but I can't quite frankly remember where we are," Hodgson said. "Certainly if you ask me the question 'Is Lucas welcome at the club and would we like to keep him?' then the answer is a resounding 'yes'."

Hodgson also denied claims Glen Johnson would be offloaded in January, and insisted the new owners were looking to build the team long-term, and the club would spend sensibly.

"As far as I am concerned, Glen Johnson will be a Liverpool player certainly until the end of his contract and possibly beyond it," he said. "We are very happy with him - he is a top-class player, an England international - so why should we want to lose him? Maybe his agent has other ideas.

"We have got new owners who are working unbelievably hard and putting in enormous hours at the club, both here physically, as they are at the moment, and even when they are in America spending hours studying games and liaising with us here. They are very interested in pushing the club forward but they want to push it forward in the right way. I have been impressed with their thoughts when we have discussed the squad, players and transfers.

"I think clubs in the Premier League are being pushed by fans and mass media to go out and splash money but, with the notable exception of Manchester City, most others have a slightly different approach and I don't see why we should be any different to that."

Johnson, meanwhile, said he was confident Liverpool would put their early-season form behind them.

"The lads have been working very hard on the training field and trying to put the poor performances behind us and get on a bit of a run," Johnson said. "It's always difficult for a new manager to come in and put his point across straight away.

"It very rarely just happens in the first two or three games. Now we're starting to play the way Roy is asking us to play, and the lads are coping well with it.

"It's very good. A lot of the lads are taking to training and the different regimes. We've got some fantastic players, great staff in and around the club, and I'm sure if we can keep playing like we are we'll be there or thereabouts."
