How do we fix our midfield?

A few years back, we had a song that stated "we've got the best midfield in the world"

Now, none of those players are here, apart from Gerrard, who is in the twilight of his carreer and seems more that a little injury prone.

This means we have (had) to rebuild an entire midfield, replacing 3 world class players. So far we have completely failed to do this. Taking Gerrard out of the equation, and lets pretend we are using 433, with strikers playing on the wings (meh), as this seems the preferred formation these days.

We had 3 central midfielders. Alonso, Mascherano and Gerrard seemed to be the perfect mix. It nearly took us to the title. I believe we should try to emulate this line up. So how close are we now?

I dont think any of our midfielders (ignoring Gerrard) are anywhere near good enough. Perhaps Aquilani could have played in Gerrards position. Lucas is useful as a utility player on the bench. I personally dont see a place for Meireles in the starting line up. He is not really a playmaker, a dribbler or a ball winner. He reminds me of Platt or Wark. Times really great runs to score goals, but wont take the game by the scruff of the neck when playing possesion (although it is early days, and he has had to adapt his game this way and that way, so perhaps he needs more time).

It does not look like we will get Aquilani back, despite some great promise toward the end of last season. So where does this leave us realistically?

Charlie Adam is a must buy. I believe he can fit into the Alonso role, which may be the most difficult to fill. Unfortunately, Slur Alex back to his old tricks trying to sign our top targets.

For a ball winner, we need someone with bags of energy, who can time his tackles. I am tempted to say Scott Parker, despite his age, as he can also distribute, and this would leave us with two good all rounders.

For the Gerrard role .Well, hopefully Gerrard can get fit, otherwise I have no idea. I would perhaps go 442, and get Nzogbia on the left

simple answer - buy some players

I think Adam makes a lot of sense and look at a younger player like Yann M'Vila to come in and sit infront of the back 4

a 3 in midfield of Gerrard, Adam and M'Vila with people like Lucas and Miereles to give some stiff competition for starting places.

We need to bring in some quality types of players. There will be quite few to go after this summer:

      M'vila, Lass/DM
      Adam/playmaker
      Sahin, Gago/CM
      Sissoko, Javi Martinez/ box-to-box
      Honda, Goetze, Hazard/attacking mid

We get rid of players who can't run, pass and shoot and sign players who do.

i think you have to start with central midfield first as theres no point in having creative forward players without anyone to give them the ball.

i think both central midfield positions are up for grabs as neither lucas nor meireles can really cut it at the highest level. gerrard is now beginning to fade big time and he cannot be relied on any longer. we need one strong, quick player with the ability to hold his position and go get the ball back when required like lassana diarra. a real dog of war.

with him we need a midfield playmaker who can defend well and can play long, short, quick and slow passes to feet or into space. at present we just dont have anyone capable of releasing forward players into space and its all too slow, all infront of the opposition and not one of our midfield 2 is comfortable with passing anything over 20 yards.

i saw charlie adam today for blackpool and although he has a very good eye for a pass the rest of his game is ordinary. he has no pace, he cant tackle, for a epl central midfield player he cant run for ****. he doesnt look to get on the ball enough to dictate the tempo and instead looks to make impacts on the game. if anything his partner vaughan looks the better player but thats not saying a lot.

i think shelvey could possibly turn out to be the midfield playmaker but he has to stop thinking he's gerrard because he isnt. he needs to start thinking like the engine of the team, needs to keep things ticking over instead of thinking he's the throttle who can put the pedal to the metal and get the glory.

the other one we will have to buy.

he's ok but he's not xabi alonso.

Alonso was not really quick or a good tacker.

Losing Alonso and Mascherano in around a year didn't help. We've got Spearing and Poulsen to show for both those losses, Aquilani having been flogged off to Juventus.

We'd do well to bring Aquilani back, will save us some money. Then build from there.
                  Are we winning?

good reader of the game with protection (Masch, Sissoko)

I think with someone protecting the back 4 (M'Vila, Diarra or Sissoko) Adam and Gerrard could be a decent looking midfield

Alonso could/can tackle, very underrated in that area and much tougher than he's given credit for.

                        Out

                        Poulsen
                        Spearing
                        Aquilani

                        In

                        Adam
                        M'Vila

                        Would be a start.

I loved Sissoko's energy and enthusiasm but he couldn't pass water.

I am actually quite hopeful that our first eleven doesn't need too much work but the overall squad is painfully thin and if we are going to challenge across different competitions (which a top table team should be doing) then we require massive investment.
