Honestly Flanagan has performed better in pretty much all of his 5 first team appearances than I ever saw at U18/reserve level. Not that he was poor - far from it - but it just shows some players thrive and improve, while some players (the likes of Darby et al) shrink a bit.

He was superb again, and as you pointed out earlier his distribution excellent. Love the fact that we have young defenders who can play football and bring the ball out rather than just hoofing it.

Wasn't he nutmegged for their first goal? Apart from that I can't recall him putting a foot wrong. Has done brilliant since coming into the first team and fully deserves to stay there based on his performances. Bringing in a FB over the summer would be a kick in the teeth to him and Kelly, and would send the wrong message to the young lads.

Whether his hand was forced by injuries or not, I'm delighted to see Kenny give the young lads an extended run instead of sending out gargbage like Konchesky. Kelly, Flano, and Spearing have all shown they can adapt and play at the top level - they just need someone to believe in them and give them the opportunity.

Was just thinking that myself. All you would ever hear from the commentators too was that he gets stuck in, loves a tackle etc, not that he is in fact a very good footballer.

I didn't think he was ready, especially after that United game for the Academy, but he has been much much better than I could ever have imagined.

the thing to remember is that young players can be up and down and then if thier confidence goes they can sometimes never recover

Great game - cant remember him missing out on a tackle. Real cruncher on Rose (I think).

yeah great game - really up for it. Got forward well which was great to see - Sign a top left back for first choice and we are pretty much sorted for full backs for a number of years

First and foremost he's an excellent defender. A typical Scouse player really, hard as nails, gives it his all. He's also got pretty good positional sense for a young player.

He reminds me an awful lot of a young Carragher, but thankfully he's much better on the ball than Jamie. He's been very impressive so far, but it's still early days for him.
