Young players learn from their mistakes, and fullback is a difficult position to play, he did well last season because alot of the time you could tell he had been told to concentrate on the defensive side of the game, and as such offered little going forward, this season he has contributed more going forward but his performances haven't been as good. It'll take time for him to develop. I think we should look at getting him a long term (6 months) loan next season, that should help him, by giving him regular game time.

He may not be ready but at least he has that mistake out of the way. I'm sure it was just nerves that got the better of him. We do have Kelly and Johnson at right back though so I agree with him going out on loan next season.

When he came into the side he played with zero fear but his confidence has eroded since the first game this season against Sunderland when he was pretty poor. Nowhere near ready. Should maybe go on loan for the whole of next season, it'd do him good I reckon.
It's a difficult time in his development - learning to deal with mistakes/bad form is really what separates defenders who make it from those that don't a lot of the time. I'd keep him around actually as Kelly and Johnson look injury prone ATM and Carragher should be being phased out. If in January everyone is fit and he hasn't played then is the time to let him get experience. Big summer for the lad coming up I suspect.

Thats the problem isn't it, Flanagan really should have gone out on loan this season to a Championship club but I presume he didn't because Johnson and Kelly are injury prone.
He's almost lost a year in his development, encapsulates the problems with young players trying to break through, too good for the reserves, not good enough (atm) to play regularly in the first team so stagnates for a season.

Still, he'll learn more from last night than he would have in 10 reserve team games.

Flanno has been poor this season

I mentioned it a few weeks ago that his early season form was poor and that once he made a mistake in those games he went to pieces

Looking at him last night I'm undecided whether hes over-eager to impress or just downright rash

He needs games imo but I'm not sure he should get them with us just yet

I'd be tempted to loan him out next season

We have Johnson & Kelly and we also now have Henderson who can go into that position in emergencies

Give the lad a season on loan to gain experience

I think he should have learned a lot about the pressures at a big club playing the games he has. I'm not sure the season has been wasted (or even been worse than a loan to a lower league club). If those chances weren't/aren't there the it would have been/be a waste.

For those who didn't hear it it was interesting that Flanagan's uncle was playing for Blackburn last night - Bradley Orr

I thought he should have been taken off after he nearly got sent off for the second challenge.

The only way we were going to lose that game (when we were 2-0 up) was if we went down to 10 men. I would have brought on Enrique or Agger and we would have seen the game out, no problems.

It's not classical management to bring a player off after 20 minutes but it would have been clever imo.

                    That's pretty cool.

I think he'd benefit from a spell on loan, if only to get his confidence back up. I think he has a bright future though.

It's a good job Johnson is back, Flanno needs a break.

He's better than he's showing for the first team. Its all about handling the fear, probably something Henderson's going through too. But Flanno is not as good, even without fear, to ever get ahead of Johnson and Kelly. Got a Kyle Mclaughlin knocking on the door too so Flanno's having to look both ways which only adds to the pressure.

1 Kelly is worringly injury-prone, so is a bit of an unreliable fallback unless he can sort that out.

                              2 Henderson is NOT a right-back.

                                Isn't it Ryan Mcloughlin?

Agree on Mcloughlin though, or however you spell it, does look to have improved massively over the last year.
