I'd hope the manager will choose players based on merit rather than history. Steven deserves respect for sure but shouldn't be an automatic pick if his performances don't deserve it.

No I'm only saying what I have said all the time but left out the Gerrard, Carragher, Rafa bit.

That is in the past and it is no point arguing that anymore.

I still believe that if Gerrard don't deliver then he should be benched. No special rule for him. If he delivers then he should of course play.

He is an excellent player but it is up to him to prove that he is back to his best and that he can get back to his best. We don't know that.

I doubt that even our medical team know if Gerrard will be able to get back to his best again. Time will tell. If he breaks down with the same injury again then his time as a top class player could be over.

We can't gamble on that one. That is why he can't play in every game.

The key point is still that he must quit the national team as soon as possible because of his injury problems. If he stay fit the next four five months then he can start playing for them again.

Owen got the same kind of injury and he never got back to his best again. He lost a bit of speed and wasn't the same player after that.

It is a very difficult injury to get back from. If Gerrard can get back to his best again then that is a bonus but nothing we should take for granted.

Eto'o also had the same kind of injury. It took him 12 months before he was 100% fit again. It took Messi eight months and so on.

I don't expect him to deliver until I know that he is 100% fit again and stays fit for at least a few months.

It isn't fair expecting him to deliver straight away. It will take time and we must give him all the time he need.

Interesting in that his best performances have come from the right and behind the striker. Not central mid at all.

i can see us playing a 433 formation a lot next season.......the width will come from the full backs........

what this could mean for gerrard? Against the ****e teams (wigan, wba, norwich) i can see him being the most attacking of the 3 man midfield.......

against the tougher teams, then maybe the deepest of the forward 3..........

if he can stay fit, then he will be some player next season......especially if he clicks with suarez, we get another brilliant attacking option and also a more defensive midfielder behind him...... if gerrard was told to play 80% of the game going forward.....then he'd be on fire.....

also, with his injury record, maybe the lack of euro footy this year could be a blessing in disguise....

Surprised he hasn't called time on England yet.
