Any best Liverpool team since we got promoted simple has to include Tommy Smith and Emlyn Hughes. They would both have walked into any Liverpool team since then. Chris Lawler (and Smith, for that matter, who also played many games at RB) was miles better than Phil Neal as right back.

Peter Thompson was also a better left-winger than Steve Heighway, able to dribble rather than beat people for speed, which was Heighway's main strength. Thompson was a joy to watch

    - like my dad always says to me....his dad used to wax lyrical about billy liddell and say that he would be in any liverpool team

I thought about Liddell but he was a left winger, do we leave Barnes out? very difficult decision

Agree with all this, going solely of what I've read or heard. I'm a 'youngster' though at 32, so purely going off the players I personally saw, my vote would be:

            ------------------Reina-----------------

            Nicol------Hansen------Hyypia------Neal

            ----------Gerrard------Souness-----------

            ---Beardsley------Dalglish------Barnes---

            -------------------Rush-----------------

And even then I didn't really see enough of Neal or Souness
I saw a dead fish on the pavement and thought "what did you expect?"
There's no water round here stupid, should have stayed where it was wet

Hmmmm toughie but I'll go for all out attacking madness and madness in goal.

              4-3-3/4-6-0

              Grobbelaar

              Nicol.........Hansen..........Hyypia..........Kenn edy

              Heighway.............Souness.................Barne s

              Gerrard................Torres...................Da lglish

I wonder if we'll be considering Suarez, Carroll or even Henderson in 5 or 10 years time?

He might be a tw*t but Lawrenson was a fantastic player. I couldn't look beyond him and Hansen at centre back.

Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

is this the best 11 players or is it the best 11 that could play as a team? that could produce slightly different results

The King, God, Sir Roger & Rushie, can't play all four so it cant be done.

With apologies to my other striking heroes: Kev, Tosh, Johnson, Torres, St John & Aldo

Or Elisha Scott? When most of us havent seen these guys play, its difficult to really say its our *greatest* ever XI.

Based only on players I've seen play:

                              Reina

                              Nicol Hansen Lawrenson Kennedy

                              Gerrard Alonso Souness Barnes

                              Rush Dalglish

In practice I think this would be more of a lopsided 4-3-3 with Barnes pushing up.

I'm still not sure whether I'd rate Reina above Clemence (yet) but otherwise I find that hard to argue with.

Your selection of Alonso in midfield worries me though - not that he's necessarily out of place, I've just got a funny feeling there's someone else but I can't remember who.
