Aquilani was excellent and we should definitely keep him.Originally posted by Tee View PostAnother good warm up. Players looked a bit sharper in the final third and Aquilani was excellent (again). Big difference doing it in the PL but I think he will rise to the challenge and more importantly fit into our system/style of play. Fingers crossed now that even JWH is backing him he will not be sold.
It seems clear to me that players like Wilson and Shelvey should be available for long term loans. Given the squad we have I think they will struggle to progress this season. Infact I am not even sure they have long term futures here.
Agree that Wilson, Shelvey (and Pacheco) should be sent on a loan as they need to play to develop.
Would like to see us invest in CB as Soto seems to be a huge liability every time he is defending against any player that has some pace, Carra is solid but not getting any younger and Agger I cannot see staying healthy all season long.Member #1 of the Luis Suarez fan club

But who can we realistically bring in as a potentially 3rd or 4th choice CB? Best to develop Kelly in that role as we have Flanno for RB IMO.Originally posted by Mostar View PostAquilani was excellent and we should definitely keep him.

Atletico was one but he also had more than few better games at the end of 2009/10 than what he showed today
Personally, I thought his performances towards the end of that season were very uneven, picking out great passes one minute then giving the ball away the next, and IMO seem to have taken on an almost mythical status amongst some fans, but there was obviously talent there, and I do think he was unfairly treated by the club last summer. But I think its fair to say, that if he had stayed here under Roy, he would have retired from playing by now
.
He was out the door this summer only for no-one has stumped up the cash required, but if he wants to make a career for himself here, the opportunity will present itself and if he applies himself like he did today, he could become an important factor in the first XI.
Always looked for the ball, kept possession well (apart from one or two occasions), got involved in the offensive play and was always looking for the free man trying to get in behind.
Good stuff, and perhaps Kenny will see a role for him this season, but pre-season kickabouts count for little in the end other than fitness levels."I will make the boys feel your support"

I certainly agree with this.Meireles is not for me personaly.-----------------------------------------------

It should be both if we ever get the chance to offload them and their wages.Originally posted by Pablo1981 View PostWell after today it's clear: IF we have to sell one of Aquilani or Meireles to raise funds, sorry but it has to be Meireles.
There is no justification in keeping them as 5th/6th choice central midfielders. People clamoring for Aquilani to get into the team on the back of one pre-season game against a **** side playing as a second striker is just hilarious.

Well you've never been funny, not even once. You've became a bit of a joke lately to be honest. I don't think anyone takes you remotely seriously.Originally posted by JohnDoe View PostIt should be both if we ever get the chance to offload them and their wages.

I happen to rate Aquilani, and pre season or not, it's clear to see he offers something different. I want him to be a part of the squad this coming season. It's as simple as that.

People clamoring for Aquilani to get into the team on the back of one solid season in Serie A and a couple of very promising performances as an attacking midfielder in pre-season games is quite reasonable.
