Redknapp's regret at missing on Suarez after Spurs baulked at Ajax's asking price
Liverpool will visit White Hart Lane boasting three players Harry Redknapp tried to sign, but it is Luis Suarez the Tottenham boss most regrets missing out on.
Redknapp admitted Spurs should have snapped up the Uruguayan before his £22.8million move to Anfield in January, but were put off by his price tag and concerns that he was too similar to Rafael van der Vaart.
The Tottenham manager said: ‘We looked at Suarez. He was a player who we probably should have taken, looking back on it. We just weren’t sure. We thought he played like Van der Vaart. We hadnt seen him play as we do not have a scouting system, but he can play anywhere.
King Luis: Liverpool's Suarez has been a revelation since his switch from Ajax
‘We were really looking for a target man but I have now seen him play up on his own and he can do that and he can play off (the striker) too. He is fantastic — top class.’
Spurs also showed interest in Andy Carroll and Stewart Downing, but could not match Liverpool’s £50m outlay on the pair.
Redknapp said: ‘We thought about Carroll, as he was a Liverpool target. We looked at him but we weren’t into spending £35m on one player. It was a bit beyond us. He is a handful. He is a great header of the ball. When you go up against him you know you have had a game, that’s for sure.
'I like Downing as well because he was a Liverpool target too. I tried to get him and Ashley Young (now at Manchester United). We didn’t quite push the boat out but they are good players.’
Redknapp rested 10 of the 11 players who started the win at Wolves for the Europa League stalemate against PAOK Salonika and is hopeful Ledley King and Van der Vaart will be fit to face Kenny Dalglish’s side.
He believes Tottenham will be competing against Liverpool and Arsenal for fourth spot and Champions League qualification this year and prioritised Sunday’s clash.
SPURS v LIVERPOOL KEY CLASH Bale is coming back into some form and he has plenty of quality around him in this Tottenham side to help him flourish.
The Wales wingback will surely fancy his chances up against Skrtel, who is naturally a centre back and not the most mobile of defenders.
Skrtel scored at both ends in this fixture last year - a 2-1 win for Spurs - but he’ll need Dirk Kuyt working hard to double up with him to contain the Tottenham flyer.
He said: ‘Liverpool don’t want to be out of the Champions League. They want to be back in there. They have invested trying to do that. They got £50m for (Fernando) Torres, I should have really bought him before he went to Liverpool as well
‘That gave them something to work with, they have got wealthy owners and they want to be where they were — a top-four team. It will be them, us and Arsenal scrapping for the Champions League this year.’
The Tottenham manager said: ‘We looked at Suarez. He was a player who we probably should have taken, looking back on it. We just weren’t sure. We thought he played like Van der Vaart. We hadnt seen him play as we do not have a scouting system, but he can play anywhere.
How ****ing amateurish does this make Spurs sound???
Hadnt seem him play and blames it on not having a scouting system??
I dont have a 'scouting system' and i'd seen Suarez play. What a ****ing tool Redknapp is
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.
you talk to Spurs fans and the ones I know are certainly not overly impressed with what he's done, spend huge amounts of money on average players, belittles them as a club coming out saying thats the best they'll do in 20 years etc..... he's slowly being found out as a media whore hence the love in with Sky etc....
