And we still ended up hanging on at the end against a Championship side.Originally posted by ~LFCHistory~ View PostI think our best game this season in terms of quality of football played was against Brighton in the Carling Cup. Here is the line-up :
25 Reina
16 Coates
23 Carragher
34 Kelly
49 Robinson
11 Maxi
20 Spearing
21 Lucas
07 Suarez
18 Kuyt
39 Bellamy
Substitutes
32 Doni, 22 Wilson, 38 Flanagan, 08 Gerrard, 19 Downing, 33 Shelvey, 09 Carroll
Is it a coincidence that Downing, Adam, Henderson and Carroll didn't start that game and he we played decent pass and move football similar to the second half of last season ?

What a minute, you included Carragher in your lineup, with the reasoning that you did so because you didn't think he would be dropped. Because you didn't list the attributes you thought merited his inclusion, I inferred that you think he should be dropped. So on that basis, wouldn't one of the problems be the personnel being picked?Originally posted by Exiled_red View PostI don't think it's the players, I think they are all capable, I just think they don't know how to play together yet.

The issue with Carragher is a difficult one, I can see both sides of the the Carragher issue, personally I would like to see us move to phase Carragher out as he's getting on an won't be around forever, the problem being Agger is often injured and Skrtel I'm still not convinced by, also Carragher is still the one that organises the defence, so we need someone to take over that role.Originally posted by BootRoom View PostWhat a minute, you included Carragher in your lineup, with the reasoning that you did so because you didn't think he would be dropped. I guess you could say on that basis that there is a problem with the selection, however centre back is perhaps the area of the pitch where the players have alot of experience playing together and should have a good understanding, we also have very little option if we don't think Coates is ready and Agger isn't fully fit.Last edited by Exiled_red; 25-10-11, 08:29 AM.The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

That is indeed true. But I am not sure if it will improve by that much.Originally posted by Exiled_red View PostI think if the players had a better understanding of each other and the system, we would have more possession and better control of the game.
In attack, I dont think Downing has been a prolific goal scorer or as a player who can consistently make things happen in the final third; jury is out on Carroll as a goal scorer; Love Kuyt but I think he is a great asset when our attacking play is clicking and is not that good when we are struggling.
In defense also not sure about Carragher/Skrtel/Agger axis when we play a more expansive style of football with little protection upfront.

I wonder how important Johnson and Agger are to how we want to play. I have a feeling we are looking to move towards something more like how City are currently playing. One of their favoured tactics is to overload the opposition fullbacks by bringing the far winger over. This is easier to achieve and balance when your own fullbacks can push up and fill space in midfield.
I think if that happened and/or we moved higher up the pitch for our defensive line we would get a lot more out of our current players. It also would make more sense of some of the things we have done with Downing and Henderson.
I also think Carroll as an option like Dzeko is for City makes more sense in terms of a modern squad than a lot of the other analogies made."The man who never alters his opinion is like standing water, and breeds reptiles of the mind."
