Short term, we should go three at the back

It's one formation Kenny is quite familiar with and could stabilize the team.

    Let me explain why:

    1. Getting overrun in midfield by only playing two CM's. That is clear, we lack athleticism and the ability to impose our game on the opposition for more than a short spell.

    2. We have two strikers who are 'undroppable'. Suarez because he's our best player, and Carroll because we need to try and get the best out of him. To be fair, he's done well over the last month and doesn't warrant losing his place in the team, and I don't care how bad that miss was, he's active and looks hungry, he's not the problem. Suarez should also not be played as a lone striker, and all of his goals have been scored with Carroll on the pitch (correct me if I'm wrong).

    3. Charlie Adam and Steven Gerrard are best utilized in a three man midfield. Both of them are defensively suspect in their own ways, and look much better (especially Adam) when they've got cover behind them.

    4. Other than Downing, we have no other natural wide man, and Henderson is clearly a central midfielder who's uncomfortable playing wide.

    5. Skrtel and Agger are both playing well and have been pushing our defensive line forward which is encouraging. They do not deserve to be dropped when Carragher comes back.

    6. Johnson and Enrique could fit in well as wing backs. Enrique and Downing have been stepping on each other's toes on the left anyway, and Johnson is defensively suspect. The extra defensive protection could help them both become less reserved going forward.

For the formation lovers, I suggest this:

    Reina
    Skrtel Carragher/Coates Agger
    Johnson Gerrard* Lucas Adam Enrique
    Suarez Carroll

    *Henderson

Gerrard, Adam, Carroll and Suarez are all playing in their best positions, and it's the only possible way it could be done. Many other players in the squad would also find places in the team more easily (Guys like Bellamy, Spearing, Maxi etc.)

I know 3-5-2 has its problems, however with the current squad we possess and the way we've been playing, it's certainly worth a try, at least until we have a chance to correct our weaknesses in January or in the summer.

    My 2p.

I can certainly see the merits of the 3-5-2 at the moment.

I've been pushing a 3-5-2 formation since we beat newcastle 3 years ago with Hyypia/agger/carra playing at the back. However, Enrique has been playing really good football of late and a lot of that is down to his growing understanding with downing - yes downing isn't playing too well with the ball but off it he is making space for the overlap and they have formed a good partnership so to go to a 3-5-2 would mean downing being dropped which may have negative impact on enriques attacking play.
People who think there's no good way to die have obviously never heard the phrase 'Drug-fuelled-sex-heart-attack'.

With those players you're basically saying 5-3-2.

Johnson and Enrique are still defenders.

We need to match up against teams not go back to a formation last seen in the 2000s...

4-2-3-1 is still the formation of choice for me.

I used to love 352 on CM2 back in 99!

Short, medium or long term 3 at the back doesn't work
The King was back for a short while. Long live The King.

3 in the middle is what we need.

absolutely, 3 at the back with wing backs came from managers realising that their defence was garbage, if we go 3 at the back we'd be admitting we're useless at the back

Playing 5 defenders is not the thing to do when you're struggling to score goals; it's a tactic to shore up a leaky defence.

Hmm, Arsenal (of old) with Keown, Adams and Bould...

                      Hardly Garbage.
