Well, I'm ginger and I take offence to that! But in all seriousness why is it ok to call someone ginger but not black? I had to suffer loads of abuse through my formative years due to my haircolour, and reckon most chestnutbrownhaired kid did and do.

It's only semi, you only take offence for the first 20 years or so, and I know he was jesting, but I think it's a valid point though, why does black, being a descriptive, lead to so much anxiety and anger but using the word ginger (it's almost always in a negative context) is no problem. Don't mean to cause a fuss, just find it mildly interesting.

                Guardian

Liverpool were embroiled in another racism controversy on Friday night when arrests were made on suspicion of shouting abuse at the Oldham Athletic defender Tom Adeyemi.

The incident occurred 10 minutes before the end of Liverpool's 5-1 win over the League One side in the third round of the FA Cup. Adeyemi became embroiled in a row with a supporter, or supporters, at the front of the Kop.

Adeyemi was visibly upset by the exchange and it required several team-mates, the Liverpool captain, Steven Gerrard, and the referee, Neil Swarbrick, to calm the 20-year-old down. Witnesses reported two fans wearing Luis Suárez T-shirts – similar to those worn by Liverpool players at Wigan after the Uruguayan striker was found guilty of racially abusing Patrice Evra – confronting Adeyemi, and one allegedly shouting "You ****ing black *******".

Merseyside police have confirmed that arrests have been made.

A senior Liverpool official said: "We will do everything in our power to investigate the matter and ensure the appropriate action is taken."

The incident could not have come at a worse time for Liverpool, given the widespread condemnation the club have received for their vehement support of Suárez.
                ****s going on?

Could they be using the mirror story from before? Wasn't this quote there?

The first paragraph, the last paragraph, and both using "A senior Liverpool figure" have me utterly convinced the Guardian have gone with the Mirror story with little checking of facts.

Where have Merseyside police confirmed arrests? Not reported on their website, or on their twitter feed?

I agree. I've tried to query on here before about something similar that always puzzles me, but the est1892 Thought Police (yes the world has gone completely ****ing mad) censor a word making sensible discourse impossible, so I'll approach it another way. I'm always baffled why it's somehow absolutely fine and dandy to call someone from the UK a Brit, but it's somehow offensive to use exactly the same diminutive form for a person from Pakistan. Why is this? My Asian wife is similarly baffled
