Yeah it seems like we are destined to never have a full team, I know everyone gets injuries, Vidic has missed loads of the season, Wilshere has been out all season etc but it seems like we get one long termer back then another one starts! Yeah it seems like we are destined to never have a full team, I know everyone gets injuries, Vidic has missed loads of the season, Wilshere has been out all season etc but it seems like we get one long termer back then another one starts! Him being out is stunting Gerrard a bit aswell as he's really deep.

This has been a concern of mine since Gerrard came back, sitting deep and unable to influence things in the final third like he's capable of.

Do you think it's just covering for Lucas, or is Stevie's dynamism slightly on the wane with age? My worry is he's been fairly deep at times even when Spearing has played. I hope he can still do what he's been capable of in the past but inevitably it wont last forever.

It's hard to tell I guess, he is getting on in football terms, especially for someone who's game is energy, drive and aggression based but I dont think a CM 2 is where he's best either so it could be that aswell. In short, **** knows! Hopefully just a tactic needs tweaking rather than anything to do with him declining though like you say it is inevitable and will happen.

I wonder if, as the age thing takes its toll, SG would be best used completely devoid of defensive responsibility in the middle of the '3' in a 4231, as he was during Rafa's time. Just concentrating on making things happen and not worrying about getting back.

But then that puts the prospect of Suarez AND Carroll playing in the same XI seem unlikely.

Or perhaps it's just a case of needing Lucas back. It's possible that when Stevie's played with Spearing, he's felt the need to stay a bit deeper to help Jay.
