I told my dad we were going to score 1 and miss 4, as we've been doing all season. And Gerrard would be our only spot goal. Then he missed and I almost cried. Then we won and I did cry.
    One tit for another.

In all seriousness, there's something about his presence which makes me think the penalty taker is more likely to miss than score.
        I think it's his biceps.

We are the league equivalent of Germany in penalty shoot outs, we just keep winning them in the big games.

I think he is great at big pressure penalties, hence his displays against West Ham and Chelsea. His presence seems to affect the taker.

Normal gametime penalties I can't remember him saving too many though.

                Johnson's penalty was immense.

Johnson should be our penalty taker.

Agreed - very well taken. High and precise.

We're better at them than they are.

                      Us: Won 11 lost 2

                      Them: Won 5 lost 1.

I wonder do these stats and known experience put a seed of doubt into opposition teams when in peno shoot outs against us? Surely it would have to be in the back of their mind?

It must have ****ed the keeper off when GJ came up to take his pen. No stats there. He roofed it as well, pretty much unsaveable.

All the stats and info on peno takers in a shoot out is bollocks. If it is anyone who has taken enough pens then there should be a good spread on where they went in, and where they have been saved. A lot will come down to how a player is feeling as he walks up to take it. Most of the Cardiff boys let the occasion beat them.

He's been a bit poor in all one on one situations really. Is this something that's dogged his whole career?

There's a book I read a year ago called "Why England Lose" which looked at the stats and it came out with only the best penalty takers have an almost perfect 50:50 split between "left" and "right", most players do have a preferred side. Obviously a penalty shootout is a "special" occasion, but if out of 7 penalties a particular player has hit 5 to the goalie's right, it would be useful for the goalie to know that wouldn't it?

On the flip side it's good for the penalty taker to know where the goalie dives too. In the 2005 CL final Dida went to his right on EVERY spot kick, including the one in the game.
