    Penalty Shoot Outs

    Our record in these things is quite incredible. Astonishing even. I was convinced we would lose yesterday's one, purely down to the law of averages, and then when Gerrard missed the first one, I really feared the worst. I think we have lost one shoot out, ever - against Wimbledon in the mid 90s. I have no idea how many we have won, but in finals alone there is:

    European Cup, Rome 1984
    League Cup, Birmingham 2001
    European Cup, Milan 2005
    League Cup, Cardiff 2012


    Crazy. I don't know how they do it.

    Considering our record from the spot this year, considering we missed ouf first two, it really was a miracle that we scraped it yesterday.

    Oh, and big credit to Dirk. Missed that and we were out.
    If we are all only happy when we are really winning in the end, when your race finishes, what life would that be?

        We missed the first two, and I thought it was over. Then Downing stepped up, and I knew it was over. How wrong I was. We do have a brilliant record in them though. **** knows why

          The penalties yesterday were awful, from both sides. Defo something we need to work on, we've been rubbish from the spot this season.

            Only Charlies was awful from our side, Gerrard's was a brilliant save and the other 3 scored.

              As you say we've lost just once in 13 or 14 shootouts, an incredible record. People go on about Germany's shootout record, but ours is better probably! I was convinced we'd lose after we let in the 2nd goal just before FT in ET, that tends to deflate teams for penalties. And when Adam skied his....

              EDIT: You've missed the FA Cup in 2006 as well!

                Coincidentally there is some fella on SSN who’s come up with a revolutionary new idea on how to take pens.

                Apparently if you hit it hard into one of the 4 corners you will score. Who’d have thought?

                He puts 4 hoops in the corners and tells the player to hit it hard and wants the FA to take him on board for the Euro’s.

                      We lost to Northampton too last year. But that doesn't count as Woy Hodgson was in charge

                          Me too, and when we missed the first two I really did fear the worst.

                          I think the Northampton loss was only the second time we've lost a penalty shootout in about 10 attempts
