I wish people would stop banging on about Carroll's transfer fee - there's a lot of very valid reasons why we ended up paying £35m.

It was widely reported we approached other clubs but were knocked back. Newcastle wouldn't budge on a barmy price (why would they?), and we had to spend the money in just a few hours.

Hence, the vastly inflated fee on (at the time) was the best, young, English striker in the league.

Personally I don't blame Comolli for that one.

Any truth to the story that Chelsea put 50million in our bank account on TDD for Torres and we only handed over 1m for Carroll because he was injured with the balance paid at the end of that season? Interest on 49m in our account over 4 months would be worth a few quid. Only heard this today at work.

Nah, I think we paid for Carroll up front. Remember reading that we were a day late so Newcastle charged us £15k interest or something.
