At 2-1 my anger turned to sadness as we ran out of ideas.

So nearly 'The Carroll Final' and quite the difference he made. Trying to look at it objectively and putting aside the pain, Chelsea scored a goal from three individual errors which all happened in one sequence and got the rub of the green squeezing one through Skrtel's legs. Did Chelsea deserve to win it? No. Did we? Only on the last 30 minutes.

Downing and Enrique were shocking, which meant our whole left hand side was shocking and Henderson tried to raise his game but the occassion got to him, yet he refused to hide. However, central midfield is not an area of the pitch where we can let that happen and the fact we carried Spearing too, meant we left ourselves with too much to do.

Carroll deserves credit today; I think the Everton chance played on his mind (the one he powered down and wide) and went for power and more central, unfortunately Cech reacted well and got the luck with the woodwork. But the way he put himself about and caused a mischief is what I expected when we signed him, hopefully he can carry this on to next season.

    It hurts.
Excellent post mate. Was totally thinking the same about our left hand side, most of our play was down the left and most of it came to nothing, loads of safe passing it about and backwards nobody able to break past their defender or drag Chelsea out of shape. Glen Johnson is our main attacking threat from wide on either side.

What was highlighted today is the deficiencies we have all known we carry for some time. We are close to being a decent team, but the areas where we are weak we are really weak.

Incredibly close call on the 'goal' that wasn't given. Could have gone either way, but personally I don't think the whole of the ball crossed the whole of the line.

Kenny's decision not to replace Lucas has come back to haunt us today. Spearing just isn't good enough for the first team.

          Ohhh Kenny.

edit: Also what worries me more, is that sides like Chavski, ****eh, Scum and Arsenal will leave us in their wake, all are nicely placed to do so, while we still flounder looking for answers to the same old problems.
This is what worries me as well. We really need to get our house in order and buying crap year in year out needs to stop. It's been the same story for the past 20 years and we are in bigger danger now than ever being left behind.

People calling for Kenny's head...if we'd won, they wouldn't be. Seems fickle.

Carroll was superb, feel for him.

Anyway, I just want to know if it was over or not. Still don't know.

Not sure on that. I think many would be saying its time to move on even if we had won

                Agreed.

Johnson was another player to come out of this evening with any credit; he provided our width, was a constant outlet and delivered some cracking balls. To be fair to Enrique, he offered the same from the left in the first half of the season, but his form has gone to **** recently. Because Downing didn't turn up, it left us so unbalanced and we relied on Suarez to drift left to provide some 'buzz' which he was able to do when Carroll came on, because we had a threat centrally.

I'd have no qualms if Downing and Spearing went this summer. If Kuyt and Maxi are off (going by reports), the squad if still being shuffled and it's gonna be a long, hard couple of years. But like you say, we are close, it's whether we can be afforded any patience.

Whether the ball is proved to have crossed the line or not, the fact that we still can't tell conclusively one way or another despite having seen numerous replays shows the referee was right not to give the goal. The referee can only give what he sees. Imagine how angry we'd have been if that was at the other end and a goal was given.
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

We'll probably never know, doesn't matter now anyway.

Nope, it would have glossed over the reality that we have had a nightmare season.

I think a huge problem is we don't have a wide right midfielder, Kuyt is probably the best option, but sadly he's past his best, both Downing and Bellamy prefer the left side and are generally poor on the right. Henderson is played there at times but again isn't a wide right player. Johnson carries our only threat down that side. This is an area that we really need to address in the summer.

Don't think thats the case mate TBH. When Kenny took over i was made up but it just has not worked out and the poor signings and bad decisions have cost us big time and he is responsible for the team and the players. League wise we are on course to finish lower than we did under Souness.
