It didn't work because Spearing and Henderson where all over place, Gerrard attempted to cover for them and that isolated Gerrard and took out a lot of what is best about his game.

I'm actually traumatised by our left side today, Enrique and Downing were unbelievably bad. Just when I thought they couldn't get any worse it was time to go to another level.

It would have been nice to play Chelsea in a cup final with a midfield too. At the very least bring Shelvey on for Henderson with 20 to go.

Serious problems both attacking and defending with those two. I'd keep Carroll (definitely), Henderson and even Adam but I'm certain we need to get rid of Downing. He's ****in hopeless. Him and Enrique have zero understanding between each other. Their "interplay" is to pass the ball about 5 yards to the other one who is in the space that the other one should have run into to keep momentum in the attack, instead of Downing - usually - getting the ball at a standing start and then completely bottling running at his man anyway.

I wonder does Downing's complete absence of cover for Enrique **** with Enrique's game as he knows he has very little protection (compared to how our right backs play knowing Dirk is there)? When Enrique goes for it he's very good if a bit brainless but at least he has a bit of pace and skill. He was truly awful today though. But when do you ever see Downing back making a killer tackle or even closing off a bit off space in our half? He improved when Carroll came on but still, he's a £20M winger - he should be making something happen regardless of who's ahead of him. Do ****in something himself. Him and Spearing (and Enrique a close third) were the villains today.
